Tesco Bank - Pain

I guess everyone got the letter about Tesco bank changing their account details, so I changed my standing order in June but forgot to put the payment reference as my card number so the payment got rejected. Tesco agreed to refund the late payment fee of £12 and so I amended the standing order correctly while on the phone with them and they agreed it was set up correctly. Came to check my bank account today and the july payment was rejected for the second time, checked with Tesco and all payment details correct, they wouldn't refund the £12 late payment fee for july and so I paid the payment over the phone and Tesco said it must be my banks fault. Rang Santander and they said its going through and is set up correctly but being rejected by Tesco, rang Tesco again to confirm what the bank said and they can find nothing wrong, so had to cancel standing order and have now set up direct debit with them for the 4/8.

All in all a bit of a pain but sorted now. Just £12 down.

Anyone else had this problem with Tesco?

Plus two consecutive late payment markers on your credit files?...which should be more of a concern to you.

Re the DD you've now set up, be sure to check the next statement thoroughly, because if it doesn't say the payment will be collected by DD then it won't be! In such a situation you'd be better paying over the phone by debit card again rather than relying on sending another manual FP.
  • Hi Yorkshire boy, the late payment fee will be on my credit file but as I show on my credit file as always settling my debts I don't have a good credit score. The only debts I have is this Tesco card and my mortgage. Santander sent one of my standing orders late to my mortgage which meant I had to change that to direct debit, and now ive changed this tesco to direct debit to come out on the 4th july - they wanted it on the 8th july but I wanted it paid earlier.

When im feeling better I think I will write to Tesco to remedy all this and write to Santander and see what they say and get Tesco to remove the late payment fees from my credit file.

Thankfully I recently got married in May and so even though I have bills to pay it means I have less to worry about with the support from my husband.:)

You can't amend a standing order whilst on the phone to Tesco. A standing order is controlled by you and the only way you could have amended it or added the payment reference would be by contacting Santander yourself.

That would be why the July payment also failed.

What's this all about? I've not heard anything about Tesco Bank changing their account details.

I seem to recall they previously used RBS, but now use HSBC. Certainly the 40-02-50 sort code they quote on their website FAQ* is an HSBC one.

Yes I can because I set it up online myself, I was checking that what I had set up was correct with Tesco, it was and yes you can amend them, I have had online banking for over ten years now with Santander. Then I rang Santander and checked with them while I was online that it was correct and there were no errors. Nobody could find anything wrong with it.
So the dd has been set up now instead and I have cancelled any further standing orders to Tesco.

Assume direct debits are not affected?

Apologies, you didn't mention that you had done it yourself via online banking, I assumed that you had done it by speaking to Tesco on the phone.

Basically I tried to transfer the Tesco credit card to a 0% one and if you have a slight late payment as in my mortgage payment was sent late it affects your score and at the time I was single so every bank rejected me for a 0% credit either because of the late payment or because I don't have a lot of debt.

Yet my husband has two credit cards and earns double than me and is able to take out more credit.
Weird I know but my credit report has no defaults and shows most of the credit I have had is settled.
