Worth switching to a meter?

Hi all,

Recently, we have moved into a new flat, and got a water bill for £269.14 (which I've paid 1/2 already) from Three Valleys Water. I asked before I paid, and they said they would refund the money, if a meter turned out to be cheaper.

Now - there is two of us living in a apartment. Can we switch to a meter, given that we live in an apartment? Is it worth doing so, as from what I gather, our water bill is already fairly low in the first place...

TIA!

This has a couple of useful tables on it. Go to your local water co's website and compare prices on and off a meter assuming you are "average" for your area.

Our water bill in devon was £420 a year. We switched to a water meter (against the water boards advice as there are 6 of us) and have paid £280 for a year, massive savings.

My Mum's just change to a water meter (Southern Water) and has in writing that if she's not happy after 11 months she can go back to the old way.. We are going to see what 1st 6 month bill is and then make a decision. I think her's will be a lot cheaper as there is only her with no wm dw etc
  • I recently moved in with my partner, to a 2 bedroom 1st floor flat. we were going through the bills, and found out that we were paying £36.00 a month for Thames Water !
The 3 bedroom house i moved from in the same Thames Water area the bill was £33.00 a month ! how can this be right.
Would appreciate some help on this as Thames Water say put a meter in, which seems to not answer my query in the price difference .

The unmeasured(no meter) water charges are based on the Rateable Value(RV) of the property. So presumably the 2 bedroom flat has a higher RV than the 3 bed house.

This is not an unusual situation.

It is unlikely that your metered bills will be as high as £30 a month - probably considerably cheaper if there are just 2 of you..
