TalkTalk overcharge - advice please

I have been a Talktalk/Pipex customer for over 9yrs and recently decided to move to BT for the free sports and Homehub. Talktalk made the process more difficult than it needed to be and as a consequence I dug out all my old correspondence. In doing so I noticed than in January 2012 they wrote to me advising my bill was to reduce by £15 pm in view of new technologies. On checking my bank account I found that they had reduced my bill to £15pm which was a reduction of £5pm. I have raised this with the CEOs office and they have come back saying the letter was a mistake and that they would only refund 3mths overcharge as a gesture of goodwill. They go on to say "you also have a responsibility to raise the anomaly to our attention within a reasonable time frame."
I am of the view this is wrong and plan to reject the offer in favour of demanding a full refund but if anyone can share an experience of a similar case (not necessarily with TalkTalk) or knows the law regarding this, I would welcome your guidance.
