Is this refund call SCAM?

Hi everyone

I am a very cynical lady, and I usually say nothing comes for free. Today I received a call from Ministry for Justice (I think that was the name) This rep told me that my claim for bank fees had been successful and I am entitled to receive a cheque for over £6000. For security purposes, I had to wait for another call, where a Lady named Sharon would call back to give me a security code that I would need when Peter Chapman delivers my cheque.

An hour later, said person calls, stating she is Sharon (Indian accent I might add), and that I have to purchase a UKASH voucher from a paypoint and phone her back, so the cheque can be delievered. Alarm bells are ringing here, as she wants the code for the £100 UKASH voucher, then Peter will arrive with my cheque.

Now, I do have an outstanding claim for said bank charges, but Im thinking this is some kind of scam.

Anyone heard of such a thing??

Today I received a call from Ministry for Justice (I think that was the name)

The ministry of justice does not get involved in the sort of business you mention. It is a known scam which is warned about on various sites that there are cold callers who pretend to represent the regulator to try and scam people out of money.
This rep told me that my claim for bank fees had been successful and I am entitled to receive a cheque for over £6000.

If such a thing existed then the bank would contact you directly. You would know what is happening as you receive a letter of acknowledgement on your complaint, a status report if its taking a while and then a letter of outcome.
For security purposes, I had to wait for another call, where a Lady named Sharon would call back to give me a security code that I would need when Peter Chapman delivers my cheque.

Redress payments are made direct from the financial service firm to the bank account they were taken from. Not personally delivered.

And there is the scam. It is advance fee fraud.
Anyone heard of such a thing??

Yes. it is a text book scam.

When they have given you their 'speech' just say oh, hold on a moment, put the phone to one side and then forget about it, go have a bath or a cuppa,

Tell them it's Ok peter has called with the cheque already and said he did not need the UKASH number and thank them profusely.
    Be happy...;)

Just wondering.... was this scam call coincidence or is there a security leak with the claim you have genuinely made for bank charges? How did they get your contact info?

Who to? They are going to be based abroad (India probably based on OP's comments) - once they have the UKASH code they can cash it in anywhere.
