carpeting over laminate

I was wondering if it's a good idea to carpet over laminate flooring?

I have a hessian back carpet along with gripper and underlay already to fit, the dilemma I have is my fitter (FIL) says keep the laminate down as it will provide a solid surface and will stop the carpet sweating.

If i take the laminate up the underlay and carpet will be on tiles/ concrete base. I am erring to take up the laminate as I don't like the idea of carpet going over laminate. need advice please.

I think it makes perfect sense what the fitter says.

Me neither, that being said before the laminate was fitted I had carpet fitted on the tiles and had no problems. Still thinking about getting the laminate up though.

Leave the laminate down, you will need to replace the carpet before the laminate;);)

It is accepted in the flooring industry that carpeting over laminate is perfectly acceptable provided clearance allows.

Are the skirting boards over the laminate? or do you have the laminate to the edge o fthe skirting with an edging trim?

If the former, keep the laminate down, if the latter, lift it and get rid of the terrible edging!

You don't need to remove the laminate along with the "terrible edging", just remove the edging;);)

The edging covers the expansion gap, as a laminate floor is a floating floor that needs a gap for the floor to expand and contract into.

Remove the edging and you'll find gaps which will be hard to cover with carpet (and make look good).

A 10mm gap? Fill it with cork (if it's a problem)

I had carpet fitted over laminate - has been down for several years now without any problems.
