I would hazard a guess that that's more the hotel trying to keep hold of their captive audience than for any other reason.
The last time I was told something was too dangerous by the tour company it was a festival in India. I went anyway, had a brilliant day out and didn't feel unsafe once - I think the coach driver just fancied a day off.

Where are you staying in Hammamet?

Hammamet covers quite a long stretch of the coastline.
It basically kicks off to the north at Nabeul, and then moving south to Hammamet Nord, Hammamet Centre, Hammamet Sud, and finally Yasmine Hammamet.

The last one, Yasmine, is a purpose built tourist resort. Big mostly AI hotels, a long wide promenade, and a marina. There's also a medina straight out of Disney. I walked in and then walked straight out again.

Have you had a look at the Trip Advisor discussion forum for Tunisia? It's quite a lively forum, and by using the SEARCH facility on there you'll find out loads about Hammamet, and what there is to do.
