Laptop won't turn on and beeps

Options
Hi, can I have your expertise again please. My laptop has got quite warm recently and then today went to turn it onand the power light illuminates and computer makes one long beep and two short beeps then nothing happens. I have tried removing the battery and starting again but no luck.

Any ideas please as I have some work on it that I did yesterday that I need to retrieve.

Thank you in advance.

you'll have to google what those bios beeps mean for your model, but it doesn't sound good, possibly graphics card - nvidia defect?

    does the fan come on?

The disk may be fine, and you should be able to retrieve data using a usb caddy for £3 ish

1 long and 2 short beeps is usually graphics card failure.

which could have happened from overheating. Very difficult to fix in a laptop. Have you left it off for awhile so it can cool down then tried it again ?

    is it still under warranty?
  • Hello, yes I have left laptop off for a few hours now and just tried it again and still nothing. It doesn't sound like anything happens after the beeps and I can't hear a fan. No it's not under warranty.
Closed -what is a USB caddy please and how would I be able to retrieve my data?
    Thank our for your help.

Not difficult to fix - Attach an external monitor, make sure you use the hotkey switch to select an external monitor.

Overheating laptops, in this weather, apparenly Acer are known for it, and apparently a BIOS update is available to fix it. The Acer that I'm writing on is going mental, due to this???? Writing in, then the cursor flies off!
Personally, and I have done this myself, if a gate fails in a chip, I've stuck a soldering iron on the faulty chip, and that has fixed it; alternatively, freezer spray has diagnosed a fault.

As this issue seems heat related, I would stuff the laptop in the bottom part of the fridge, above the salad chiller, for a few hours with the hdisk/battery removed, they just unclip/1 screw

The cursor has flied off 5 times in this post so far! Have to go back and edit...Acer=evil! or Vista?

XBOX failure was also caused by a similar fault. Poor soldering, due to no lead in solder.

Don't recommend putting it in the fridge.

Thank you for replies so far- I have tried just now attaching to an external moniker and nothing happens. I can hear the fan working but no visual display. I shall try opening it up later and having a look at the hd to order the caddy once I'm home from work. Dora xx

    how would that help ?

if the graphic card is demanded, then it doesn't matter what monitor is used. The laptop monitor and the external monitor both use the same GPU

That fix would only work if its the laptop monitor that is broken, and that wouldn't give those beeps, u'll just not get anything displayed on screen.

If this happens in a PC, the usual fix is to replace the gpu, which isn't usually possible in a laptop
