you need to seal it first with an acrylic based primer not pva

What is this tiled area for?

If it's an area that's going to get wet like a shower or close to a bath you want to be looking at tanking it. Tiling straight onto plaster in wet areas is asking for trouble, inevitably you get some water through the grout or under the silicone and then the plaster blows and the tiles come off.

Dare I suggest that most bathrooms are not tanked around a bath, or a shower bath? None of the fitters who gave me quotes including tanking, and I doubt it was tanked originally, and the tiles lasted 45 years. I'm sure my neighbour's bathroom will not be tanked when it is done later this month. Fitters I spoke to said it should be tanked if the wall regularly got soaked e.g. shower area.

Sorry to interrupt this thread, but what preparation would I need to make to tile direct onto plasterboard. A bath & shower is to be installed. Thanks.
  • Primer and then tile. Tanking is massive overkill unless you are having a wetroom IMO.

We just done our bathroom got a primer from tile shop then tiler just tiled on top. He said just use pva instead. Must admit the primer we got smelled liked watered down pva. Out bathroom consisted mostly of plasterboard but some parts were the old lathes which we replaced some and used bonding and the multi finish plaster

We are just about to have floor down got 1/2" ply and then screwed down and he said use pva neat before floor tiles with adhesive go on top

I've also been looking at shower wall boards, these must cost a lot less than tiling, and no more grouting to re do.

It's insurance, yeah it might be fine without it but if water does get under the tiles a few year down the line then it can wreck your shower or bath. Why would you not want to tank it?

Really you shouldn't be tiling onto plasterboard at all, you should use a cement based backing board that won't disintegrate when it gets wet.
