no way- im going for me! ive been at this degree for five blinking years- i deserve to swan around in me cap and gown for a day!!!!

WELL DONE! Daughter graduating in July after quite a few years (banned by her from mentioning exactly how many FOREVER). You do deserve to swan around in cap and gown for a day. I will be so delighted to actually watch her graduate at last that I'll have to wipe a tear away I'm sure.

It is all quite expensive though. I was particularly peeved when elder daughter graduated that after spending all that money on the cap and gown, the gown wasn't even pressed, it was very creased indeed. Obviously you don't get a chance to press it yourself because you only get it on the morning of the graduation. Only something minor I know, I think it's a 'mother thing'.

    I, for one, can't wait!!!

We got a group of us together after the ceremony (about 10-15 of us) and got the parents/family/friends facing us with some trees in the background and we threw our hats in the air.. Got some amazing photos between us- Happy action shots- There was at least 20 cameras flashing at the one time and then we shared all the photos on Facebook! A lot cheaper and captured the atmosphere completely! :D

In defense of the gown people, I know it IS alot of money, but from their business point of view, they have to buy 1000s of gowns and hoods to make sure there's enough for everyone, because lots of graduations from different unis are on the same day, and after the summer graduation period, they have to put them into storage for a year.

They are earning their entire years wages in pretty much 2 weeks, hence the high costs I guess.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Glad it's not just me that thinks its all a big rip off!

Tickets for mine were £10 each, plus £7 for the buffet. That's £41 straight away without the gown hire or photos! Gown hire is £36 from gownhire.co.uk. £77 before photos then!!

Luckily my parents are paying, but i feel bad because i know they haven't really got the money, and god knows how much it will come to with the photos too. Oh well, it should be a good day to celebrate all my hard work anyway :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
I only had to pay £36 for the gown hire but it was then £50 for the tickets - it's at Symphony hall in Brum so no free parking either - we're going to all train it up there and it's a flipping Monday so no chance of going to the ball that night either - hmppph!!!

Mind you at £45 per person for the ball - I prob wouldn't have gone anyways - LOL - as it is I had to pay for the kids to come to the ceremony as it's so late - 2.45 - I'm sure my 7yr old is just going to love sitting though 2 hours of names being called out - raflmao!!!!

At my uni (I've graduated twice - BSc and MSc - PhD to come!!), there's two ceremonies a day (in November!!) so you have to give the gown back quite quickly after the ceremony. Just enough time to get photos then it's ready for the next person :undecided:

Started saving for the PhD ceremony already, should have enough for November 2008's by then.

My PhD gown / hat is £45. Sod the over-priced photos, will get friends and family to do them!! But yes, the whole thing is bloody expensive!
  • I really can't abide the whole graduation costs thing.
I'm going to the ceremony so I have to have the gown and hood apparently.

    Costs:
University library fine = £10.00 (prevented from graduating if not paid)
Ceremony = £45.00 (two guests included)
    Gown & hood hire = £35.00
Graduation ball = £55.00 (per individual)
    Total = £145.00

I can't even go to my own graduation ball because after I've paid for the rest (plus a gas bill which always seems to arrive when I least need the hastle) I have £10.00 to my name (hopefully, if nothing else comes up) to feed and clothe myself and travel on. That's saying nothing of the fact that the lease on my flat is up at the end of the month and I have to find a new place with no rent or deposit which also allows pets as I have a cat.

    Stressed anyone?

You cannot include the £10 in the total when you owe the money - not the fault of the university if you can't return books on time!

You don't have to go to the graduation ball.

Surely the guests can pay for themselves?

Which makes the grand total of £35, not £145!
    Gone ... or have I?
