I can't even find what I should wear.

If it's furry, I could be swayed :)

I think to buy the outfit was a few hundred quid when I was doing all this last year - I just hired and like someone said, through gownhire.co.uk works out just under £100. Then about another £50 for photos. And we were charged about £12 each for guests, so that was £36 just to get 3 people in to watch.

You may find local photographers have gowns and hoods in stock for your uni. I had my pictures done after "the day" -cheaper, my hair wasn't messed about by the wind, and my makeup was fresher - and overall it was much cheaper.

You don't have to attend do you? I woudn't have gone to mine if my parents hadn't insisted.

Something anyone who has a graduation ceremony coming up should try and think about: the chances are you aren't going to fall over on the stage or walking back to your seat or whatever so try and remember to look at your guests/the camera, not your feet. At mine my dad commented that everybody was looking down and probably lost a good photo opportunity

I thought the hire was really expensive, but I found you could just hire the hood. I bought an ex-hire gown (really nice as it was linen, not polyester and in perfect condition) for the same cost as hiring from one of the hire shops, hired the hood then sold the gown - after me and two of my mates had also used it to graduate in on different days. If you ask the shops they often have second hand ones stashed in the back.

You can ask to buy your photos on CD at a hugely discounted price and get them printed+framed elsewhere. Also this way you can ask them to give you the entire selection of photos if you had a few taken with different family members.
They say you can't put a value on life... but I live it at half price!

its blinking ridiculous! im lucky that my oh and parents split the costs, but it cost £20 for my oh and mums tickets (i could only have 2 so no one else could come!), £56 for my cap and gown hire and £35 for the bog-standard phot package of 2 big and four little shots of just me.

a bucks fizz reception (great) is included in our ticket price but we decided against the meal. it was £20 a head and they promised to cater to all dietary requirements but me and my mum (im a veggie who cant eat wheat and my mum cant eat either dairy or wheat) really stumped them so we're going elsewhere!
