I've lived here for over 15 years and also studied previousy at UCL. I've wanted to move out for the past 4-5yrs to be honest. I really used to make the most of london, gigs, theatre, the ballet, touristy things, clubbing, eating out etc, but these days hardly go into town. I loved it whilst it lasted and was happy to pay more for everything. We live in a lovely leafy borough with parks and things to do, but it does cost and hard to justify, in my mind, as we never go into central London.

We could live anywhere really as I'm into my horse riding and OH isinto his cyclng, so would be better in the country. I'm not tired of life...just London life and now have other interests! But OH has a decent job and wage and i get my London weighting and so we wouldnt earn the same. If we lived up north we could buy a nice place outright and so not need such high wages... I'm working on the OH;)

just a simple question, as if I was living in London I would want to move from there because its simply too expensive.

For the same price of a tiny 1 bed flat, you could move north and get a modern semi...

Unless you have very good careers, then its a bad decision to live there

The further away you get from London and the SE, the fewer jobs there are unfortunately. I bided my time until I got one that paid the same as my London one but it took a long time and there was a lot of competition from local candidates.

As it goes I am starting to feel rather stagnant and wondering if / how I should get back into the London job market as a commuter. Nothing would ever compel me to live there again though.

Its a city for the very rich, those on benefits, or 20 somethings whose optimism outweighs reality these days.

I'm originally from Manchester and moved to London 13 years ago and bought a flat at the same time. I can tell you that if you haven't MEWed or been foolish enough to have an IO mortgage them property is not in fact that expensive if you are selling your existing place that is. Also salaries are vastly better (Manchester id be on about 35k in London I'm on over 100k). And finally why on earth would anyone buy a modern house they are pretty much all of dreadful quality.

home is where the heart is.

For my money I want a nice modern house, not a worn down cramped flat

But I don't live in a flat. Not everyone in London lives in tiny flats.

I'm also not very rich or on benefits or 20 something years old as another poster seems to think.

We're in zone 6 (previously zone 4) and I swear, we have better walking opportunities than our friends who moved out to the West Country! We're right opposite a major park with free roaming deer etc, whereas they have to drive at least 10 min if they want to walk their dog off the lead. There aren't even footpaths where they live, just country lanes with cars whizzing past!

Personally I wouldn't live anywhere else in the UK... You don't find the same diversity, culture, opportunities anywhere else. But then I'd also hate to live in a new build (or anything with less than 12' ceilings downstairs) - but on the other hand I'm not afraid of a bit of work to get the house of our dreams up to scratch - hopefully we're getting there!

But, being from another Northern European country, I'd leave the UK altogether if I was to leave London - but strange as it may seem, London is our first choice, for many reasons! And we were heartily cheering on Andy Murray today...

Question - Londoners, why do you not move?

    Answer (from a reluctant Londoner)

    1) They're on a grossly inflated salary that nobody elsewhere in the UK would be stupid enough to pay them - 10% of respondents

    2) They are thick - 20% of respondents

    3) Combination of 1 and 2 - 70% of respondents

You can have the best of all worlds; access to London, live oop north!! My husband commutes to London 3 times a week on average, sometimes when I am free I go with him and we step up the pace to the frenetic lifestyle, culture and endless shopping. Then he comes home to the green suburbs of the north and we live the dream!!!

I did a year in London for university then bailed out of there as fast as I could! Back in Bristol where I belong. Can't beat the South West. :)
