Londoners, why do you not move?

just a simple question, as if I was living in London I would want to move from there because its simply too expensive.

For the same price of a tiny 1 bed flat, you could move north and get a modern semi...

Unless you have very good careers, then its a bad decision to live there

Because of the disparity between what the Londoners currently do, work-wise, and the work that's available up North?

Because of the wide range of concerts, etc that are available in the city, which aren't available outside it? When touring bands come to Europe, how often do they play one date in the capital, and none elsewhere?

    As a Londoner its because:
    • My family live here
    • I have a job
    • London is a bit more recession proof than the rest of the county
    • Great transport links

I wouldn't live inside zone 4 though, its too crowded.

Employment opportunities for the intelligent are tremendous, cultural opportunities are world class, transport opportunities for business and holidays are outstanding and you can easily find great places to live with no Daily Mail readers insight.

I lived in zone 2 and worked in zone 1 for several years. Fantastic way to spend your 20s.

My job prospects and pay are much better here than elsewhere in the country. The public transport system on the whole is excellent. I love having so many social and cultural activities and events right on my doorstep.

Would I like to have a nice big house and garden in a nice quiet neighbourhood? Yes. But then I wouldn't have the above. It is all about priorities and compromises and right now, London is by far the best place for me.

I've watched friends of mine in the same industry outside of London be made redundant multiple times and struggle to find work; however their house is bigger than my flat. As I said - priorities and compromise.

A Londoner all my life , my family and friends are here , I love living in London most of the time , I own my house which is almost paid for, I'm retired and OH will retire soon and we aren't struggling like some people are although I have a very modest pension I don't borrow or live beyond my means , you have to cut your cloth as they say..

You do realise that not everyone in London lives in cramped flats, right? Many people do not like modern houses either. I personally think that most of them are like shoeboxes.

We live in rural Wiltshire in an AONB where our 2500 sq ft period house with 1/4 acre garden cost the same as DS's (age 23 and a graduate) SW London 800 sq ft Edwardian flat.........both purchased in 2011.

However, whilst we love having a big garden and lots of great walking opportunities on the doorstep, I personally envy DS having so much culture on his :o Every so often I have to go to London for my *culture fix* :D

Curiously, for a 23 yr old, DS hates London with a vengeance and is only staying there 'cos of his GF who loves the buzz. He hopes to persuade her to sell up in the near future and buy a small-holding in the sticks, LOL ;)
