you will do.. if you've taken the ethernet cable out of your laptop then you've unplugged the network cable.0

but I cant get onto the internet without the cable being directly connected to my laptop.
there is a red cross on the LAN icon in the bottom left of my comp.0 -
You need 2 Ethernet cables if you have a separate modem and router: one to connect modem and router and the other from router to computer.
Note - Ethernet cable from modem goes in WAN port on router.0 -
It worked fine previously with the ethernet cable conneted to the router from the modem. Why do I need a cable attached to my laptop?0
-
because you haven't setup your wireless?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

With one cable from modem to router you can only connect wirelessly, and as that's the subject of this thread that's obviously what you want to do, so the 2nd cable isn't necessary. If you want to connect wired you'll need the 2nd cable, and it's easier to set up the wireless settings on the router with a wired connection.0

I have not got any other ethernet cables. Does that mean i cant set up the wireless settings?0

You can use one Ethernet cable to setup the wireless router to work with your laptop only (no internet) then reconnect this between the modem and router to get on the internet. It's not an ideal solution but it might just work.0

What do i do then?0

Try accessing the router config screen on http://77.97.30.1 or whatever the instructions say it is. No idea what username & password are, try admin.
Note:- cable from laptop should connect to one of the router's LAN ports, and when connecting router to modem use the WAN port.
Have you tried just going to your laptop's wireless icon, and connecting to the wireless network that way? This should be done when router is connected to the modem.0
