    Just go over and say hello. Don't make any reference to how you didn't buy his house - that would just be embarrassing for you both.

    If he's a reasonable person, he'll understand without you needing to explain that you bought the other house because it was much cheaper. If he's unreasonable enough to be offended, then a tin of biscuits isn't going to make things any better and might make things worse!

    We also looked at next door before opting for ours - identical layout in reverse.
    It didn't feel uncomfortable in the slightest, they took theirs off the market and then sold about 18 months later for 50k more than we paid for ours!
