Immersion heater leak, just before cold inlet

Hi all,

My immersion heater is currently leaking and need some advice on repairs. From what I can ascertain the leak is on a patch of metal that is welded to the tank, which forms the screw for the nut where the cold water inlet attaches. Sadly it is not from the nut itself as this could be solved with a little PFTE.

I have tried a small tube of epoxy which stated could be used on wet fittings. Sadly the water still comes. Currently I'm getting about half a litre a day out of it!

Had a plumber round last night who said he had recently used a fiberglass pad material which sets hard that would be suitable. He would not give me the name and, like all plumbers, has not been in contact today to let me know when he could do it.

Any thoughts? Getting quite desperate now! Do I need to add more descriptive info? Are their more suitable web sites for this type of advice?

Hang on in there - we've got our very own plumber who'll be along any time now...

I had the same thing but I didn't notice the leak until it had damaged the lounge ceiling. I tried all sorts to plug the leak but just got a new tank in the end.

Putting and kind of patch on this will only be a temp measure, as with the constant movement of the tank getting hot/cold, it will have to be re-brazed or re-soldered.to do this you will have to drain off the cylinder.
I wouldn,t have thought the average a diy-er could do this, you will have to get a plumber in to do this.
regarding the plumber you had, dont let him back,if he wants to patch this job up,then first ask him would he like a cup of tea or some straw for his horse.

I am thinking of getting central heating installed in the next 8 weeks so a temp fix is all I need. Problem is still have not found any sensible suggestions!

    Any thoughts?

Speaking of which, in my attempt to get central heating quotes I seem to have found evidence of price fixing! Looking for someone to install central heating for less than £3500 in a 2 bed property (small combi and five rads) is a nightmare. Anyone from the north fancy a expenses paid trip south to do the work - you all seem to be cheaper up there!

We are only cheaper when we quote for northerners. ;)
