Confused by options

Options
Hi all,

I have been a long term customer of Virgin Media (from the Telewest days) and have now moved into a new build property with no tv aeriel and no cable supply for Virgin Media.
After posting a question on this forum I was advised that the only way I could get a package to match my requirements (Basically freeview plus Disney channel) I would need to get Sky installed.

I have contacted Sky and they estimate my line speed to be between 0.3mbps and 1.5mbps!!!
I have checked with EE and BT and they estimate 4mbps.
The only sticking point is that the earliest an engineer can get out to the property is August!

As such I have a few questions....
1. Do I need a phone line to be able to get Sky TV installed?, or can I get this installed at a later date and just not use some functions?

2. I thought Sky used BT phonelines to provide their broadband services, if this is correct why is there such a large difference in the estimated line speeds?

3. Could I get the phone and broadband through a different supplier (EE) and get Sky or does it need Sky talk enabled?

4. Based on 4mbps and other services using the internet for a lot of features (on demand etc) is BT Vision and Talk Talk realisitic alternatives or would I struggle to use these features?

I may end up getting a TV aeriel installed until I can figure something out, the other half doesn't function without her soap fix.

Thanks again folks,

Paul

    It's an aerial.
You don't need Sky broadband to get Sky TV, not do you need a landline at all-that requirement can be bought out at sign up for an one off payment of about £20.
BTV and any on-demand service will typically need about 3MBps to get a decent result.
No, Sky will be using their own LLU network on many exchanges, otherwise you will be on the dire Sky Connect (resold BT service),
Do an exchange search on www.samknows.com for your LLU options.

    That's only 3 weeks away!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

That's presumably an OR engineer, not the Sky installer (Sky don't have 'engineers').
The normal wait for a new line provision is 4 to 5 weeks, what is the problem with a 3 week leadtime?

Shouldn't that be Megabits per second - not MegaBytes?
