I love hummous but you can't get it in France which is where we tend to go on holiday most years. You can't get tahini or sesame oil either but you can get tins/jars of chickpeas in every supermarket.
I thought I would try making it just with tinned chickpeas, olive oil and garlic/lemon juice last year but other half was dubious so we ended up having something else. Has anyone tried that and if so does it taste OK or does it need some other sort of seasoning? It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -

I've used yoghurt in my hummus sometimes to make it more of a dip, you could also spice it up with cummin, or cool it down with mint leaves, some pine nuts might also be nice.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

I would take some tahini paste with you but that means you will have to take your food processor on hols too, unless you're using a stick blender?
Ted's solution sounds nice, using yoghurt and adding spices. Failing that in Sainsburys you can get houmus with some whole chick peas on top, its delicious I think it comes from Lebabon or somewhere in the middle east.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
Thanks for the suggestions. we go sailing and conditions are fairly basic ie no electricity for gadgets but I bought a mouli which purees things with elbow grease so I probably could make it. think I'll experimentIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. I'm using chickpeas for tomorrow's tea which is a moneysaving remake of a school favourite. We often had beef cobbler so Im going to make bean and chick pea cobbler - in the slow cooker of course!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

I got this recipe a few months ago. I cannot remember exactly where I got it from (but I know it was another forum
but that was before discovering MSE!) and have been meaning to try it out ever since then, because it sounds so delish and easy. I might make it today or I might make Curry_Queens hummus or Maggies1976 Spicy bean and vegetable stew ....... decisions decisions.....
Chickpea Pate
Ingredients
250g can of chickpeas (or 125g soaked for 8 hours and then cooked for an hour)
1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon of wholewheat plain flour
1 serving of yeast (I use stuff that comes in a 7g sachet)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 medium potato (grated)
4 spring onions (finely chopped)
1 stick celery (grated)
1 medium carrot (grated)
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 teaspoon thyme (dried)
1 teaspoon basil (dried)
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
Directions
Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. Pour the mix into a baking tray (preferably 1"/2cm deep and approximately 9"X9" or 23cmX23cm). Use a fork to level it out in the tray. Bake at 180C/350F for approx 1 hour until it has risen and the top is a crisp golden brown. Remove from the oven and let it cool completely.
I cut mine into four pieces, put two in the freezer, one in the fridge and served the other piece right away. It goes well with crackers or as a sandwich filling.0 -
We are having a month that is WAY beyond the realms of being 'tight' for money.
I have happened upon a bag od chick peas in my cupboard from one of my former health kicks ( I blame you are what you eat personally) ....
anyway i dont have a clue what to do with them, does anyone have any ideas how i can use them to make a substantial meal, that doesnt involve humous and that my OH who is the original caveman when it comes to food, wont turn his nose up at.
Thanks :EasterBun ...what more do I need to say?!

Hi!
I love chickpeas but don't get to eat them as much as i'd like as my OH is meat mad
Back to your q thoughONce you have cooked them (they need soaking overnight then rapid boiling for 10mins, then simmered until tender) they are great in spanish dishes or curries!
They are delicious with chorizo (spanish sausage) and tomatoes in a stew. If you cant afford the chorizo at the mo, you can add a tsp paprika (more to according to personal taste) and perhaps some regular sausage to the stew for a tasty flavour.
Or you could make a curry with them and serve with rice and/or chapatis (so easy to make!) I got a good spice mix from tesco, was under 50p I think! Just serve with some lemon wedges, really delish & fresh!
They can also be added to meat dishes to bulk them out.
