How could I not reply to a fellow Baggies fan :D Boing boing !

The first thing I'd do with them is soak the whole bag in water overnight. Next day bring them to the boil in a large pan of water. Lower the heat so they are bubbling gently and cook for about an hour until soft to eat. They don't have to cooked to a mush.

Drain and cool. When cool divide into portions (about as much as you'd get in a tin), put into plasitc bags or freezer tubs and freeze. You can use them straight from the freezer if you are adding them to hot liquids.

One of my favourite ways with chickpeas is to cook them in a spicy tomato-based stew with chorizo sausage and red peppers. Sort of Spanish-style. This is also good with chicken joints thrown in.

Another favourite is chickpea curry. Add them to a base of onion, garlic, tomatoes and curry spices along with diced potato, carrots and peas. Add a dollop of yogurt towards the end of cooking.

Try making a vegetable stew with them and serving over couscous. Use a Morrocan spice mix like harissa and add veg like carrots, turnips, courgettes and lots of tomatoes.

You can also make a snacky/nibble type thing with them. Toss in olive oil with spices and brown in a frying pan till toasty. Cool and serve.

Back to more important matters -Spring Bank holiday, what a nightmare  How did we not win ? To make matters worse for me, my next door neighbour is a Derby fan and he actually went to watch the match at Wembley -he couldn't believe they won either. Still, at least it wasn't Wolves :D

Thriftylady sorry I haven't been on before but I've been away for a couple of days and actually missed the match on Saturday. First one for God knows how long! I actually work at the Baggies as a matchday steward so they pay me to watch! AS for Wembley wouldn't you rather have the results we are getting now rather than being hammered like Derby!!:rotfl: :rotfl: Anyway I'm going to try to do a chickpea curry tonight but am trying my own low fat version. Probably end up slinging it!! I only got onto these chick peas because Asda do a beautiful potato and chick pea curry on the deli counter. Anyway boing boing for now
We finally did it! Debt free 28/6/10 :T  :T

    Very true ;):D
  • Lazy meal tonight (there's a new series of Primeval at 7! ).
The chicken and curry sauce are in the slow cooker on medium. I'm using tinned chickpeas to bulk it out a bit, but they really only need to heat through properly, would you put them in an hour before you want to eat or more/less?
    Thanks.....

    Hi

I was the one that posted as the Bean Virgin (does that remind you of the joke.....? "Waiter, waiter what's this you've given me?" "Bean soup" "Yes I know it's been soup, but what is it now?")

SOrry, back to the point. Last week was mixed bean cooking. Now it's chick pea cooking. How long can I expect them to take? Normal pan on the hob. Want them done before bloke arrives to fit glass splashback in kitchen.

In the interests of economy, ease of bringing stuff home from the shops etc etc I decided to try cooking my own beans etc. Do a whole bag at once. Don't know how much I've saved by doing this, will take a look.

  • Hi Purpleivy,

I've had the above book for years and absolutely swear by it. The codes on the back are:

    ISBN 0-00-635536-6 OR 9 780006 355366

Try boring it from the library first to see if you like it, but it will contain everything you need to know.

    Happy cooking.

  • Depends on how fresh they are - older beans take longer ;) I cooked some pretty fresh ones last week and they were done in an hour. Edit after reading GR's comments below - that was after I'd soaked them overnight.

Good for you using dried beans - even with the cooking time and fuel, they're way cheaper than tinned :T

I'm trying really hard to remeber other bean jokes, but failing at this time of day. I've been out for my exercise this am, though - I was a Runner Bean :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Sorry, another OT comment - love your sig, purpleivy - I'll pinch it, if I may :o:p
