I thought that we qualified for a free boiler as we are on Working Tax credit, income of £12000 and I am 60. Unfortunately I have been informed that we don't qualify as my wife earns the £12000, therefore she gets the Working Tax credit (even though both names are on the notice), but I am 60. It seems that the person who gets Working Tax credit must be 60+. Great advance for the family friendly government!!

That's a shame. Keep an eye out for other schemes and hopefully you will get one next year.

I got my boiler installed yesterday but got stung today for the best part of £500 to get my car through it's MOT! Money in one hand and out again in the other.
  • Mum has just had second company out to assess - Northern Gas this time after reading a comment on here that its vallient boilers they fit which they do. Contacted them directly 2 weeks ago and chap who came today said could be another 2 weeks for paperwork to process before a date for fitting.

Dyson via EON - Very thorough and efficient with appointments and calls and would have been 21 days from start to finish however they wanted to fit an Ideal Standard boiler which reading others comments could be more costly with repairs in the long run, so have postponed their offer of a fitting date as hopefully the Northern Gas one all goes to plan and gets the go ahead.

My husband and I run a heating company in the north east and as a registered Pas2030 installer with funding are currently installing boilers under the Eco Scheme. My advice would be that this is not just something the big companies are doing and if you look locally you will find a smaller installer doing the same thing.

The benefits need to be evidenced by way of letter as this essentially qualifies the funding with the age of the boiler.

The other thing is that this scheme provides free funding and not a free boiler, this means that once the epc (energy assessment) has been carried out on the property and the amount of funding is then calculated this does not always cover the full install cost

The funding for the installation is given on how energy efficient the house is and not how inefficient the boiler is therefore if a house has cavity wall and loft insulation they will get a lower amount of funding than one without, regardless of the age of the boiler.

At this point the owner of the property would need to contribute and it is perfectly acceptable for the installer to request this

The one frustrating thing we are finding is that people are not being made more aware that these grants are available so getting it out there is challenging as people often believe you get nothing for free!

If anyone would like ay clarification please feel free to ask

    - your offer of advice is encouraged, all members will I'm sure benefit
    - you could give that advice here, right here, where it can help all MSE'ers

  • I am very happy to answer questions on here and did not realise I couldn't add our email address.

In this scheme people often have to give personal information and I thought there might be some who would prefer this to be private.

I will edit the address and please if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

My parents are on Pension Credit and they applied for the new free boiler scheme. They had 3 visits from different people to do surveys then it all went quiet. No paperwork ever appeared so my Father phoned and was told there would be a charge of £299 for "extra electrics" but the company weren't able to tell him what this involved as they were just putting the boiler in the same place. They haven't got any savings so I'm not sure where they are supposed to get this cash from. :(
  • Hi, if additional funding is required for the installation this should be set out as any normal quotation so you can see where this extra cost is going, £299 is a very suspect amount if the boiler is not being moved.

If they say they cant install if he doesn't pay I would contact another installer in your area who has funding to do this work.

About a month ago, my mum received a leaflet through the door from Scottish Gas. It said about how you can receive a new a boiler and some other information about things you can receieve and how you can still apply even if you own your house. We own our house outright.

So my mum phoned up. My mum said to the man, "I am phoning up about the leaflet" and the man said "Aye what about it"

My mum said "well, it says here I might be entitled to help" The man said "Only in certain cases" My mum said "Well, I get ESA and also DLA"

The man said "ok, are you over 60 or do you have children under 5 years old?" My mum said "No, I am 58"

The man replied "Sorry you don't qualify for any help because, you need either children under 5 or you have to be over 60"

Is this true?? Because, it does not say anything about these 2 things on the leaflet? Thanks
  • You qualify on ESA is for have a second component, that can be either kids under 16 or if you have attached to ESA the work component. This is shown on the ESA letter as "you receive extra money because you are in a work related activity group". Some benefits qualify automatically some have to have a second component and ESA is one of them. However Scottish Gas have given you the wrong information

I am on DLA, working - earning a pittance (considerably under the £15,000 limit) - our heating system is causing us big problems
Does this scheme allow REPLACEMENT boilers and pipework to be fitted for free or is it only NEW systems ?
Also - I don't see any mention of our supplier Scottish Power .....
