I'm sorry to hear you seem to have had a bad time with the jobcentre! They aren't all bad! Firstly would I be right in thinking you are getting IS at the moment? Secondly how long have you been on IS I know in you post you have put you were on it for 6 months (not sure if that was 6months in total or 6 months of last year)

I'm not sure about HB, but Tax credits will work out your entitlement based on your projected earnings. The reason I asked earlier if you are on IS at the moment is (and please hear me out!) is if you are then your lone parent advisor can sort out you tax credits for you and maybe able to fast track your claim, you may also qualify for some in work benefits and also HB IS run on (to allow you to get your first months wages)

    Hope this helps.

Some of benefits are taxable and are classed as income whereas some are non-taxable and are not classed as income.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

Thanks buff_tom, that is a very helpful post in essence but fortunately not relevant in my case; mine is a sickness IS claim and not one as a lone parent so same amount of money but different rules. I had to wait out the full 26wks last year when I first became a single Mum but this year I was ill and needed time out for a month or two and will have only had about 10wks off work but the 26wk rule does not apply to me this time I was informed.

I know who to call when and will hopefully not have too many problems this time in writing and phoning at the same time to each of the three relevant departments (IS, TC & HB).

I've yet to understand what a lone parent advisor actually does besides make me cry, tell me to "get a job like everybody else" (oh I hope you read these boards you sadistic, warped sado) and accuse me of benefit fraud for following a colleague's advice to the letter. Sorry but my experience really has been absolutely horrific. I am now under the benefits manager who is at least civil but I still feel sick at the thought of ringing the job centre.

    Hi Elle,

I think the Tax Credits should work out the claim based on your earnings when you start work if you are coming off IS. I had a couple of months on it last year (from 1 March to 2 May), and when I restarted work in the May, I'm sure they worked the claim out based on my earnings. But if not, your income for the previous year will be even lower, but you should be entitled to claim childcare. Not sure about CTB or HB I'm afraid - I have found phoning my local office & asking them to give a rough estimate has worked sometimes. As long as you say to them you appreciate it's not a definite exact figure you want, and just a rough idea, they should give you an idea. HTH. Good luck!
