Agree for the potential for it to be a scam or not really a new phone, here's the questions I asked to reassure myself

    Here's the reply I got.

    6) You can drop the phone off but as we dont perform any repairs onsite we will still need to post the new phone back to you.

That would have alarm bells ringing for me. If they don't have stock to hand will you be left without a phone?

Looking at the Ebay post they offer to replace blacklisted phones. On thought is they send them out of the UK and any replacements are sourced in another country, hence avoiding balcklist issues.

Yes the Blackilisted phones is questionable.
I'm currentky using another phone so being without on efor a short period is not a probalem, would have been the same if had sent it to Apple.
I'm assuming the phone comes direct from their 'supplier'. They do quote targeted 48hour turnaround - from the point I send the phone. They must just check the serial number and pass on the details. They can even work out what network it is locked to from te serial number and ensure you get the same network locked device. I don't think average Joe like you and I would be able to get that info from serial number or IMEI (although I bet you could if rang Apple support)

The feedback amount isn't huge, what you would expect from a company that has links to Apple or it's suppliers, more like a one man band, but the actual feedback from buyers tells a convincing story.

walk into Apple store. Pay Money, walk out with phone.

Or save a few quid and find yourself done over in 6 months time...take you time, make a choice...

Yes considered that choice but it does hurt to pay a substantial amount for the phone in the first place and then again to have it replaced, hence exploring the cheapest option. Especially considering that extra £50 will go direct to Apple who don't cover liquid damage that can occur through everyday use. The satisfaction of paying them less ;)

Anyway, aside from hating Apple, this site is about Moneysaving and the forum is about sharing opinions.

This appears to be a pretty much equivalent service so much so that the end result is I get a replacement for my iPhone. Nothing to suggest that it will be bricked/blocked in 6 months time... the possibility is there... but that would suggest that we avoid the small independents all together, in all walks of life.

Agree with many of the contributors on this thread... the risk is there. Is that risk worth a £50 saving? For me, quite possibly. If I was buying the phone new, outright then saving £50 would be negligble but when you have shelled out a few months ago, the last thing you want to do is spend more money on it. (AppleCare springs to mind)

I'm assuming that as it's water damage, you have been declined a warranty replacement from apple - did you take it to the genius bar? Sometimes they can be very kind there and replace it for refurb for free, even if damage is your own fault (not sure about water damage but have had 2 iphones with screens smashed replaced for free by apple).

The added value of getting a replacement from apple would be that your replacement would still be covered by warranty for the remainder of your original warranty - though i can imagine at this stage you perhaps don't have much faith in an apple warranty!

Another option is an insurance claim, do you have a bank account or house insurance that may cover a replacement?

    Thanks,
Don't have any insurance that would cover personal items such as mobiles.
I did take the phone to Genius Bar, they opened it up and checked that liquid had caused the problem. Tried a second time and sent it to Apple via post, they confirmed the same.

This eBayer also confirmed that the warranty would end on the same date that it would have done on the original unit, exactly as happens with Apple replacement as you have stated.

I could easily confirm this post-sale by checking online.
