HELP - presentation for interview!!!!

OMG - I got an interview for my dream job - well the job on the way to my dream anyway, for a Graduate Teaching assistant in HE.

I have to give a 10 minute presentation on my specialist subject(Tourism Business Management) on a theory, topic or concept as delivered to 1st yr HE students!!!! I'm going to outline the use of a PEST model for external analysis as I can go through that in about 10 minutes

OMG - I've done presentations as part of my course and usually feel confident - also did one on behalf of the college at a conference giving my viewpoint as a mature student (I have another one to do in July at a proper academic conference in July as well - and present a paper - eeeek)

But this one is making me sooo nervous cos my career sorta depends on it - LOL. I've got to ring and confirm on Monday and I'll also ask what equipment we get to use but I keep hyperventilating now at the thought of it!!!!

Anyone help me as to how to control the nerves - I know the trick about biting my tongue if I get cottonmouth but that's it LOL

Valium or alcohol - not both!!:D
    (Seriously, good luck!)

What visual aids are you planning to use and have you prepared handouts?

I only heard abut it today so haven't started it yet - Going to do it on powerpoint as we have the interactive whiteboards at college - I'll double check whether I have one to use when I ring to confirm on Monday. But yes I prob will use handouts as well

Practice in the mirror or outloud until you know it inside out! If you know your stuff you'll be wicked. If ever I'm presenting I try and discreetly tap my toes to keep a rythym too...it stops me being motor mouth! GOOD LUCK! x

Apparently it's best to say nothing and just pause if you are about to "umm" or "errrr".

Also they say pictures and images are good.

Good luck and make sure you practise

I don't use notes and move around a bit on the stage/podium :)

I find it helps if I walk around a bit - and if the lights aren't too bright, I look at people to see who's listening ;)

    Dress well (glam), it helps.

when you breathe out all your muscles naturally relax, so take some deep breaths before you go in, really concentrate on breathing out properly and controlling your breath. then stand up straight and smile, it will make you feel much better as you walk in.

also i wouldn't recommend writing a 'script' or anything word for word, work out what areas you want to talk about, the main points you must cover and feel comfortable with them, when you get there to the interview you'll give a much more natural presentation than trying to remember everything you wrote down.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!
  • I agree with the breathing it really calms you down. I use the 7 - 11 technique. Breathe in for the count of 7 and out for 11. The point being your out breath should always be longer than your in breath for the purpose of calming down so the numbers aren't as important as the longer out breath.
    I hope that makes sense.
    Good luck

Are you sure that something as simple as a PEST chart is what they are after? Maybe also use this opertunity to show your depth of knowledge.

I've actually done it now and what I've done is a SCEPTICAL model as it's more applicable to tourism - It can't be too long as I've only got 10 minutes and i have to pretend I'm in front of a group of 1st years - so again not too technical - LOL

I've just sat my Strategic Management exams and External analysis was one of my questions so I def know the subject inside out now - I managed 10 pages just on that - the most I've ever managed in an hour!

It's just getting the nerves under control that I'm worried about - In the past my mind just tends to go blank and I work on auto pilot - apparently I give good presentation but I can never remember how to move my body and not to wave my hands about too much.

Definitely going for the glam factor - got my good old standby monsoon dress all clean and pressed and my killer patent courts.
