I think a lot of you are being pretty mean about this.

Great, so you don't see it as a big deal, OP can go somewhere else, sure...I don't think the OP said at any point that it was the end of life as they knew it, or that they'd never be able to shop again...OP just said it was annoying, which, tbh, I can sympathise with.

I go swimming or to the gym (well, not so much at the mo, being lazy, but that's another thread) around 5 times per week. The lockers at the gym take a £1 coin.

For this reason, I carry two £1 coins in my gym bag (one spare). I always know when I go to the gym that I have a £1 coin with me, so I never have to worry about it.

If, on the other hand, the gym started taking my £1 coins and putting them back onto my card, etc, I'd be fairly annoyed by it.

Like the OP, I don't use a lot of cash, so it would mean I'd have to make a special trip to the cashpoint every couple of weeks to get the money, I'd have to go somewhere to get the £10 note broken (and if they refuse, which they do quite often in these parts, I might have to buy some gum etc to break it), I'd have to keep a track of the withdrawals in my budget/statements...Would it be the end of my world? No. But it would be more annoying than the current system, which is pretty much what the OP said.

(I also think that the whole idea of refusing to someone back money in the same form they gave it to you in is fundamentally quite sinister....)

edit: scrap the below, I re-read the OP :)

Btw, what happens now if you pay by cash?

I wonder if there's any way you can get around it really pettily, by paying 1p of your bill in cash each time you go and putting the rest on card, or something like that.

morrisons near my mates has a similar policy with paying and getting a refund when you go in and spend, i had the wise idea of using all but the last half hour in town, in last half hour go in, spend just over the minimum on shopping for someone else (which i always have to do), make up the extra buying something for myself and getting the refund, their car park is only monitored for cars having p and d tickets so nothing stopping me doing it, i always pay cash and then i get it back exactly how i want it
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

Unlike the OP I do not want to live in cashless society.
I like to jingle and jangle my coins aswell. For the icecream van, hot dog van, charity boxes, pay the kids who wash the car etc.

Got to carry some cash...got to.

If you disagree then you really need your head tesed. Can you imagine what would happen if charity collectors at Victoria station carried card readers?

...people like me and the OP could give them money....?

    :)

it's not that I object to carrying cash, it's just that
    a) I'm always so overdrawn most stuff goes on CC, so don't have cash available
    b) As far as I can see, cash is just for frittering away. Things I spend it on when I have it: Icecreams. I could, no, *should* do without them (due to lack of gym, see above ;)). Chocolate (likewise). Coke (likewise). Mcdonalds (likewise). Cakes, pies, misc bad food...I don't give any to charity (I give to my chosen charities by DD), I wash my own car, I hardly ever ride a bus...The only thing I ever *need* it for thats "useful" is the carpark. Even then, I take the cash from my coin tray, which I fill up every couple of months, so I don't "carry" the cash as such. And I'll be much happier once these "touch and go" debit cards come in for that sort of thing.

Can anyone suggest anything else that cash is actually useful for? Are we missing out without it?

Ooh, and tips too...need cash for tips after a meal...but there again I'd be much happier if all retailers could agree to let you add it onto the card...Would be one less thing to worry about...
