What non perishable food to pack?

Hi everyone,

My family and I are taking a 2 night break in wig wams at the end of the month.

I was wondering if any of you could give me tips on what non perishable items to pack to keep costs down while we are away. So far I have, cereal, ketchup, bread.....

Any help would be great.

We usually freeze a couple of meals (bolognaise, chilli, casserole etc) then take them out of the freezer as we set off, so they're still chilled when we need to heat them up. Pasta to accompany them obviously. Any rice/pasta that just need hot water adding.

If you don't have cooking facilities, I'd go for cereal bars, crisps, tinned meats you don't mind eating cold, tins of tuna/sardines are good, rice cakes, ryvita or something similar.

    Have fun!

Noodles are quick and easy. For the first 24 hours you can pack a cool bag with eggs bacon milk etc.
Domino etc do pasta in pouches and sauces to stir in which are non-perishable. And quick to cook on a camping stove- dry pasta takes ages!

If you have access to a cooking method take MRE. Some of them are nasty, but go for the ones designed for campers, not army personal and they're actually all right.
I usually have a couple to take with me when away places because I don't trust the food :D

    (MRE: meal; ready to eat)

If you get milk in 1 pint cartons you can freeze them and use those in a cool box.. they should keep everything very cold and not go off..

eggs don't need to be kept cold, in fact you're not supposed to keep them in a fridge.

Bacon, cheese, bread can also be frozen to use as it defrosts.. ditto stuff like sausages, burgers.

Domio sell pasta with sauce outs, pasta is cooked, just needs reheating.
John west do pasta 'salad' boxes, usually found in the tuna aisle, they can be eaten cold or cooled.
Tortilla chips and dip, which can be bought unscrew top jars.
Tins of cornbeef - a Godsend for sarnies.
Tubes of primula cheese spread, again sarnies!
Sealed waffles, croissants, brioche or pain o chocolate. (Long life)
Tines of mixed beans, can be plonked on salad or even better mixed with sliced mattersons sausage for a cold tea.
Don't forget things like breakfast bars, custard and jelly pots and juice cartons.

Have an amazing time, I'd LOVE to stay in a wigwam!

Nut nuts nuts. then condensed milk, non-perishable milk and cereals. cracker dried breads. pigpen is correct, the majority of the world dont put eggs in the fridge but my gosh do eggs break.

    Hi

Why not think of a menu that you'd like whilst you're away and then look at ways you can achieve it.
For two nights pre made frozen meals should be ok. A cool box & icepacks or even plastic bottles filled with water & frozen will stop them defrosting too quickly.

A tip from my great aunt - butter the bread, then slice it. That way you aren't trying to keep slice & loaf off the beach (or wherever) before adding a filling & handing it to the gannet.
ASDA currently have a promotion on some Batchelors rice (savoury - add water & simmer for 20 minutes, chuck in any canned meat of fish for quick hot plateful), noodles (ymmv) & the pasta & sauce combos all at 50p a packet. Saves a lot of bickering. (I see there's a Campbells promotion - similar ideas just more expensive at 2 for £1.50 but you may prefer the flavours.)
Then canned foods. Spuds, mushrooms, beans - then whatever else you dare combine to a one pot "stew". If they are hungry enough, and/or drown it in enough sauce, most lads will eat almost anything.
Have you any special favourite meals you can take & heat?
Frozen milk beats those odd blue things for practicality every time.
