A Select silver is a basic account, its for those people who don't quite qualify for a select account. If you read on this forum there are lots of people who had the step account and can only upgrade to this account even after running there accounts with natwest perfectly for many years.

None of them have the Purple card on this type of account, also a friend of mine whom works for Natwest says it is a basic account and is aimed at those people with step accounts whom want to be able to use all cash machines and not just Natwest/RBS group cash machines.

    I'm confused!:D

My understanding is that Natwest do three current accounts - The Select Account, Select Silver Account and Select Platinum Account.

None of them are basic - they're just their standard accounts.

If I'm wrong, where are the non-basic Natwest current accounts?

You'll only get the contactless card with lloyds TSB or Barclays, if your credit score is good enough for them to trust you with one.

I have a friend who has a barclays account the same as I do his card starts 4658 which is the full online card and isn't contactless. Mine starts 4659 and is contactless and an ofline card (means it doesn't have to dial home to check funds are in the account).

If they can only offer you a basic account then you won't get a contactless card with these accounts either!

Seems a bit of a stupid policy only trusting contactless cards to people who pass a certain level of credit score, my orange prepaid mastercard has to check funds are in the account for each transaction but is contactless so why cant the likes of natwest and others do the same with their basic/online cards that also check for available funds for each transaction?

All my cards are Contactless and couldn't care less if they wasn't TBH as I never use them and I don't live on a plane or a train or live inside a petrol pump.
They are all hype and not worth starting a thread about the useless things.
Contactless or non contactless who cares

There are two select silver accounts with Natwest. One is an upgrade for the basic account, the other is an upgrade for the select account. Sounds like the OP has the former

It isn't necessarily a basic account, it's on sale to anyone who wishes to pay for it. The debit card varies, depending on the status of the applicant.

I did upgrade from a basic account - mainly because I was told that the basic account didn't get reflected on my credit report, I was told that Natwest use an internal credit scoring as well as an external credit report - running this account well would help improve my internal and external credit rating.
