Travel Insurance for internal flight in USA?

Hi all,

I am heading off on holiday soon to the USA and was wondering about travel insurance. We are flying to New York, but will be flying down to New Orleans. Do internal/domestic flights in the US require travel insurance? To anyone who has ever got an internal (not connecting) flight in the US before, what type of insurance have you used? I don't think a "Single Trip" insurance policy will cover me for this, even though most define a "single trip" as anything within 31 days. I've read some policy documents for the "Single Trip" providers, and they mention that only the first outward, and last inward flights are covered. Is "Backpack" insurance the only option available for this?

Many thanks!

You need travel insurance against the risk that you lose your possessions or need medical treatment while abroad. So why do you need insurance for your domestic flight? Do you usually get insurance for journeys within the UK?

the flight in question is in the USA, not the UK but IMO that flight is included in the overall insurance package. I have done some internal flights in USA and never thought about getting extra insurance

Travel insurance also covers against the cancellation/delaying of flights, and your baggage, but only on the flights specified in the policy.

The policy documents were a selection from the results I got from the comparison site TravelSupermarket. I don't remember the names, but one was the first, cheapest one for Single Trip. I think it was their own insurance cover, and it definitely said first outward, last inward were only covered. Plus it mentioned no cover for connecting flights, which we will have on our return. I suppose it'll just be a case of reading all the different providers and seeing if they specify something similar. I was just curious in case this was the norm. I've only ever been on direct flights, with no internals (outside of the UK).

Photome, do you remember if you were covered by a Single Trip policy, or was it a MultiTrip/Annual cover?

    Thanks for all the replies.

Usually the more expensive the policy, the better the cover. I have seen policies that cover all flights and not just the outward and inbound. Unfortunately I can't remember which companies they were with.

All I can suggest is that you continue to read the policy wording of some more, better policies.

I have had various policies, but after reading your post I may not have been covered for the internal flight, I never checked. BUT does it really matter, If the flight is cancelled or delayed, they will get you there at some point probably sooner rather than later as there may be many flights per day (of course depending on route).

Baggage is covered on my household policy so I never add it on to travel insurance anyway

Not applicable in this case however.

The OP has a policy that covers them for the period they are on vacation IN the US already-therefore if they need medical *treatment* (health checks aren't covered by holiday insurance) during that period they will be covered by the policy they have already.

Extra insurance would only cover for cancellation and curtailment -is this what you are concerned about OP ? Rebooking most domestic flights would have a cost of $150 maximum if you "chose" to reschedule due to illness -often not much difference to your insurance excess anyway.

Is it medical you are concerned about ...or some other element of your cover ?

EDIT Sorry just had a thought - Is the New York/New Orleans segment a connection from NYC -eg is NYC just a connection point - and all on one ticket ....or are you staying in NYC and have a seperate ticket on another date to New Orleans ? If it's all on one ticket and you're just connecting in NYC then you're covered anyway as it counts as part of your transatlantic journey as you are merely in transit in NYC.

Why not get an annual policy just in case? Then you're definitely covered, and you're covered if you decide you want to go away again within the year.

    .

That's what comes of looking just for the cheapest cover - there WILL be single trip policies that cover those flights, it's a question of sifting through the policies until you find them. Then choose the cheapest one of them

    It is a minefield though
