It's called fee avoidance and will get your auction pulled if reported. Too many pulled auctions equals a suspended account.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Is that an extreme example or have you actually seen that happen? Any item numbers?
If i was selling, say a reasonably priced item and i was a business, there would still be an overhead in having an item picked up - staffing, storage, etc, so i could see why people would do that - personally i dont, but i dont think its beyond reason.
Also ebay does give you the option to charge for local pickup0 -

I would have thought a business would build into the price that they sell the item for the cost of overheads rather than charge a collection fee.0

For the reasons i gave, then no i dont think thats necessarily the case.
Say you're running a small business (which i am), that sells off excess stock etc on ebay (which i do), then if someone says they want to come and pick it up say a second hand laptop they've bought
(a) i have to ensure i am physically there (affecting my work schedule)
(b) they will maybe be there 10-15 mins (time)
(c) they may want to pay by cheque (risk)
(d) they may want to pay by credit card (2.25% cost)
(e) they may want to pick up outside my normal working hours (inconvenience)
(f) they may take several days to pick it up (storage)
(g) they may not turn up
Now i dont actually charge for local pickup, but i can see why people would.0 -
a) set a starting price
b) set a reserve price
c) use fixed-price buy-it-now
d) use 'make an offer'British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

I think the general idea is that you factor your costs into your selling price.
If you hit them with a load of spurious charges your customers might well dry up fairly quickly...The money, Dave...0
