hello , where do i begin

i was on the internet last night , by the way we have bt yahoo / bt total broadband , anyway i got a messanger email thingy through and it was from my brother in law and his wife it was about a virus thingy and it said to pass this message on to other people in my email address's.. anyway i closed the message that came from bt yahoo messanger and i never thought anything of it.. untill i went to turn my pc off , it kept turning on and off. so i had to turn the computer of manually..

anyway this morning i went to turn the computer on and it wont.. it just keeps on shutting down and reopening. im on my sons little lap top now. lucklerly my sons lap top was off when i got that message from bt yahoo messanger..

do you think its a virus or anything ? we do have norton antivirus and i scanned the hard drive last night after that message from my brother in law and his wife..

hope you understand my message..

also we have never had any virus attacks on the pc since being on the internet since 2001.. so if it is a virus attack its our first.

anyhelp please ,, thankyou in advance

see you from kerry..

    try getting into safe mode

    http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

and then using system restore to go back to a date before it happened

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

and that should get you to boot up again , then follow

If you still cannot boot up after system restore then try safe mode again and a scan with Nortons

do you have documents you need to keep or photo's then ??

sounds like the only option is a repair installation of Xp , which SHOULD keep all the documents in place

Stop! You've gone down the wrong track. At the bottom of the screen it should say F3=Quit. Therefore press F3 and start again.

Look at the guide in the link from gaming_guy it says:

From this menu press "ENTER" (NOT "R") to begin the repair install.
