There aren't any cheaper options on Orange.

It depends how much you'll use the phone. You might get by on just sending text messages instead

Or unlock the phone, and get either an Irish SIM pay-as-you-go card or maybe an O2 or Vodafone or 3 UK one.

O2 Uk has a cheap (same cost as UK, including free incoming) Ireland Bolt-on, as well as My Europe Extra, Vodafone Passport is useful, and if there is 3 Ireland coverage where you'll be then call charges are exactly the same as here (but are not that cheap)

I think Meteor has the cheapest charges within Ireland, but I haven't checked int'l tariffs on any networks

You can get tariff info, and links to network sites (click logo) on
    http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/ireland.html

If you intend to make a lot of calls, you might look into callback services, either with an Irish SIM, or with an O2 UK one on their Ireland bolt-on. You could leave a message on your Orange answerphone with the O2 number, and divert all calls to it (preferably before leaving UK)

Orange do travel bundles but they work out more expensive than the normal cost of calls.

hi pity you are not on the 3 network as your incl mins count when you are on 3 ireland ,so you can make and receive calls as if you are in the uk,I live in N/I and find the 3 service great as we go down to the south a lot and have NO roaming charges
