I amwanting to buy a travelcot for whenbaby stays at mams house and it may be usefulfor weekends away etc but was just wondering what they are all about? I bought the best matress for her cot soit is safe (airflow and all that) i would like todo the same with a travel cot but ama bit confused as to if a travel cot needs a matress or not. Babies r us have reasonable priced travelcot and also sell matresses for them? can anyone advise me, also most of the travel cots seem to be very close to floor anyone spotted anything higher up. Obviously i dont want to spend a fortune but also dont want to compromise babies safety.

my travel cot doesn't have a mattress, it has a piece of board with foam on top that makes the bottom of the cot square when it's folded out. it folds around the metal frame when it fits inside its bag.
this is the one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BRAND-NEW-GRACO-COMPACT-TRAVEL-COT-IN-PRIMARY_W0QQitemZ260121610725QQihZ016QQcategoryZ53674QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem0 -
if you want something higher then you can get ones with a bassinet on top ( removable for when baby gets more mobile / bigger)

I know what you mean about them being close to floor but they are all like that! They can double up as playpens too which is useful. They are supposed to portable so the mattress is integral and Heather38 has described it quite well. There are some with a basinette where you can raise the mattress higher. I am sure they must be in ToysRUs but you could go to Mothercare and ask someone there.0

i am more concerned about the matress, what does a travel cot come with as standard is it a plastic matress or what? i am edging towards buying a matress for it as baby will be in it to stay at mams which will b every few weeks. Has anyone bought one with mattress and how do they rate them0

If baby will be staying at Granny's this frequently, and assuming she has the room, I would try and get a free secondhand cot off Freecycle and a new mattress. Will be much more comfortable and convenient than a travel cot. The only travel cots I've ever seen don't have a mattress, just a piece of board which lies flat on the bottom of the cot which is about 2 cms thick. It is plastic but not padded0

If you are definitely wanting a travel cot, then you can get better mattress for it here?

the graco ones are foam covered board, with material covering over the top so not plasticky and sweaty ( but not particularly thick and comfy either)
i agree,if your child is going to be staying @ your mums regularly for the next few yrs then better off to get a proper cot and matress !0 -
the travel cot i got is a blow up 1 with plenty of vent holes around the side and the bottom. no need for mattress tho it does come with a thin duvet like thing that ties to the bottom so they don't sleep on cold plastic. it's great on space saving when traveling around ( i travel alot from the north to the south as most of my family are down south). it also comes with it's own pump that inflates and deflates in minutes, it also has a nice bag that it all goes in2. i found mine on ebay.
i also double this 1 up as a play ball pit so my son loved it.1st son born 11/02/05 2nd son born 09/01/08
thats all i'm adding to the human race so think yourselfs lucky lol0 -
Your mum might find lifting a heavy baby from a travel cot difficult, not the best thing to do unless you have a very strong back! As other's have said a proper cot would be much better. Also being so near the floor it could be draughty for the little one.0

I agree- our travel cot was easy to put up and down but for a bigger baby it didn't offer an awful lot of support and once your LO can stand up in it they are not as secure as a proper cot.
IF your mum has the space then Ikea cots are very reasonable.
If you go the second hand route make sure you buy a new mattress, and that it fits he cot exactly.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
