Put in a proper digital programmer instead of a room stat; for an extra £40 or so it'll give you far more control and potential economy.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Why would it be one or the other?

I have a digital programmer to set when the heating goes on and off, and a thermostat so it doesn't come on when it's already warm.

I like the laziness of a room stat. I never actually turn my central heating off, even in summer. The thermostat effectively does that for me. And if there's a chilly morning (like today), the heating will come on for a bit before I get up.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Why should the radiator nearest the room stat not have a TRV? Excuse my ignorance!

Effectively, they will be fighting each other!

These days, most decent programmers incorporate the thermostat.
