We've had an energy monitor for several years now and as said they aren't 100% accurate but they give you a very good idea of what's on and what's not - a quick check before you go to bed can make sure that unnecessary stuff is turned off.

For instance I know when my wife has left all her computer stuff on overnight (60 watts or so) or we've forgotten to turn off the water feature, another 50watts (not much point in running it all night or when we aren't there - it's a feature, not a filter). Even our electric recliner chairs which take 70mA each when doing nothing = 17watts = 34 for two x 24x 365 = 300kw a year = £35 or more. So, without much effort turning these items off just for 12 hours a day we can save 600kw a year = £66. Not a lot, but add in all the other stuff on standby which now gets turned off and I reckon we've reduced our electricity usage by at least £10 a month
