Seeing through your generality, I agree.

Of course, if that Shell petrol just happens to price-match local supermarket fuel, then the branded [Shell] fuel would be the better option [more & effective additives for the car]....

But I realise you were in fact referring to the V-power branding and 98 octane petrol...or were you?
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

I will generally fill with branded (normally Shell) and will take a 1p hit. Being a tart, any more than a penny I will go with the cheapest.

I always use branded fuels, I don't trust the supermarkets AT ALL. The fuel companies rip you off to your face once a week, but they don't hide it with psychological trickery and confusing pricing.
The big supermarkets shut down all the cheap local shops, rip us off every day of the week and THEN we want to pay them for petrol too? Well I say BLX to that, i'd happily pay 3p more a litre to avoid giving them any more of my hard earned cash......

Given it all comes out of the same refineries and Shell have had their knuckles rapped in the past for over claiming the impact of the fuel save stuff, I have no issue with using supermarket fuel.

As it happens, the cheapest station to me (less than the supermarket) is an Esso.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

You most certainly do not need V-power in a car like that - waste of money. V-power petrol is only really for high powered mainly japanese sports cars.

I agree with the first part but the second part is wrong. A number of cars need 98RON or higher, not just high powered Japanese ones. All that matters is whether the ECU is mapped for 98+RON. If it isn't then using it will make no difference, if it is then not using it could cost you your engine.

Pump fuel is even worse than our standard 95 octane in the USA where if I'm not wrong it drops to low 90s or even below 90.

It's not the same rating system however. Regular 87 is worse than our standard but midgrade 90 is about the same as our regular and premium 93 is the same as our super unleaded.

As above, the US system is different. We just use the RON (Research Octane Number) whereas they provide the RON and the MON (Motor Octane Number).

Their system is a better indication of how the fuel acts under load at temp

My reading of the OP was that the suggestion from the friend was to use Shell's (standard) fuelsave petrol, not V-power (which would clearly be ridiculous for the Hyundai in question!)

If so, the following ASA ruling in relevant, which essentially forced Shell to remove the fuel saving claims from their adverts as they didn't have the data to back it up:

    http://www.asa.org.uk/Rulings/Adjudications/2011/10/Shell-UK-Ltd/SHP_ADJ_154707.aspx

That's not to say there might not be some improvement from their Fuelsave fuels, but that if their is an effet it is likely to be smaller than originally claimed.

Personally I buy diesel from Morrisons. I did try Shell Fuelsave Diesel for a while but was ultimately not sure that my car wasn't running a little worse as a result. (Their diesel does have a higher cetane rating than supermarket fuels, and there is the question of how long it takes a car's CPU to adjust to this.)
