Car problems after filling up!

In 28 years or so, the only water I've ever had in fuel came from an Esso station. It was a serious inconvenience seeing as we filled just before joining the M5 and the running problems hit about 10 miles later. Fortunately, being a simple old carb engine with no electronics to complain, struggling on with the misfire until it finally cleared itself was a viable (though irritating) option!

Storage tank problems are not reserved for supermarkets, it's just they're the only ones anyone ever seem to complain about in public.

Just thinking the same, reading forums, supermarket fuels seem to be the cause of all problems!

In over 500,000 miles, I have only had problems once - from Shell.

    Was it esso fuel?

I filled £30 in my tank the other week got to the bottom of the tank and started to get white smoke coming from the exhaust.

Never had that before, filled up with shell v-power diesel and problem has gone.

Wont use esso again, never had any problems with shell.
  • The petrol station in question was Esso only put £10 in though so could have been worse had I put more in.

Changed fuel filter and spark plugs today, driving has improved considerably can now easily get up to 70mph.

The car still seems to loose power a bit when going from 20mph till 30mph although this doesn't happen all the time so all in all problem seems to have been fixed hopefully after a few days should there be any more water in the fuel system it should go away hopefully!

Thanks for all the advice appreciate it!

Thanks for the update, and the confirmation that it's not always the supermarkets' fault! Hopefully, as you say, it'll clear up over the next few days.

Not to mention the common snese approach of just getting on and fixing it rather than first post being "who can I sue?" That's a refreshing change around here lately :D
