I hate facebook myself, I've seen so many family fights on it over nothing that I just don't want anything to do with it. I'm currently being referred to a social worker so I will ask them if they can help me.
    I totally understand about Facebook!
Good thinking about asking your social worker. If they can't help (or can't help soon enough) it might be worth looking at adverts in shop windows / notice boards or checking the local paper.

Good luck with the clearing out. My flat is in a similar state and I'm moving out at the end of the month. Have been employing the little and often method for a while now, firstly it was paperwork, any pieces of paper lying around I checked and either put in the recycling box or if it needed shredding a backpack which I took to work with me to shred. Anyhing I needed to keep went in to a folder.

Now I'm on top of that I seem to be better at not keeping the random stuff I did before. Am currently working through my DVDs and books, have a couple of stacker boxes I'm putting things I plan to get rid of in to and am packing keepers in strong boxes ready to move with me.

Odd little things I decide to ebay am using the app on my phone to list as I find them. Some sells some doesnt but its all in another stacker box out of my way until it does/I move and drop it off at the charity shop near work.

Sounds like the kittens are great for you, I know when I first left home leaving my dog behind broke my heart, can't wait to be living in the same house as him again once I'm moved which is hugely motivating me to clear out as he's old and hopeless so if I move with loads of stuff he'll not have the space he's used to having while I stay with my Dad.
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

You can get small table top dishwasher that sit on the work surface, or drainer.

Or use paper plates and just bin them.

There was a Channel 4 programme about hoarders and there was a company that came in helped with decluttering, I can't remember the name, but there are some links that might help.

I think the OP said they barely had enough room for a toaster.

Now that's a good idea, especially in the short term. Paper plates for a few weeks until you can get the house a bit more straight.

Thank you for that link Bigmoney2, I found some good information in there. I think I will probably go the paper plate route as I already use disposable cups. The only thing that would need cleaning then, would be the cat bowls, and I'm sure a cleaner would be ok doing that.

Trying to find a service to get the initial de-cluttering and cleaning done, as my new social worker has got back to me with a good cleaning service they use. Any suggestions on where to look? I've been doing some google searches and texting anyone who gives a mobile number but no one has got back to me yet.

Feel free to PM me with services to try!

Well I've done it, found a website where I could post what I wanted, and get multiple quotes within an hour. Mentioned on the post I'm deaf and got a few text messages. After looking through some websites I've found a cleaning service that are going to come out twice a week and keep the house maintained.

And as a bonus, on Monday they are going to send in a team to tidy the house from top to bottom and get it kitten friendly :D

I'm so happy that I'm finally getting my life back, now all I need to do is figure out how to make friends :o

Do you find your deafness a barrier to making friends? If so, there might be groups local to you specifically for deaf people that have a social aspect to them.

Ah RazWaz i'm so pleased for you! Those are huge steps forwards and I hope you are really proud of how far you have leaped forward!

I am also trying to organise a cleaner once a week but the lady I was interested in has not got back to me. I have just taken JTW's advice and asked about on Facebook.

I understand what you mean about facebook, I have it and have some lovely friends on there but I try to use it at arms length. I don't really talk to my family on it and I am very selective about who I have on there. I think it is what you make of it personally. It can be a stream of constant drama if those are the type of people you have on your friends list.

I also find it useful to connect with people with the same disorders as me and I know admin two support groups on there which is a good feeling to know you can support others as well.

I'm not trying to convince you to have it haha, just saying it can be a lovely tool if you are aware of what you want from it.

I hope the cleaners do a great job and your kittens are home soon!
  • Hi RazWaz,

It sounds like you've had a really tough time of things, good for you for pulling through and coming out better through the other side! It' certainly inspiring to others dealing with issues of their own.

With regards to the clutter in your house - I understand that it can be a drain and certainly overwhelming with such a large task to tackle by yourself. Have you thought about maybe asking friends/family for help? You could even pull a "Mary Poppins" and make a game out of it - put on some music, make a pot of tea and start shifting!

Alternatively, some volunteer groups may be able to help. As you're recovering from an illness and operation, I don't see why anyone would object to you getting help in. Some people use the hashtag #wewillgather on Twitter when they want to gather groups of people for volunteering opportunities to do some good. That might be worth looking into?

I really hope you manage to get the flat in ship-shape soon ready for the arrival of your new fluffy friends!

    Good luck :)

I like this thread, you sound like you're doing really great! I too suffer with depression and my house is also a tip - not because I don't tidy but because my partner has so much cr*p that he refuses to throw away. We have a tiny house and this junk takes up two bedrooms and the passage, and although he knows the mess sets off my depression he just will not get rid of it. Writing this has made me realise just how insane it is, I'm sure you'll all tell me to either bin the stuff or bin him!!

I think I'll take a leaf out of your book, OP, and get it all shifted!
