  • Surely if I was living alone I would get the council tax paid and help with the service charge. So that would give me £280 per month that I could easily live on.

You will need to check with your local authority what type of Council Tax Support scheme they run as every Local Authority is different. The non dep charges I gave might not be applicable in your area. Some Councils have increased the non dep charges - some have scrapped non dep charges altogether.

Very few Councils give unemployed 100% help towards their Council Tax since Council Tax Benefit was scrapped. Some have to pay from 5% to as much as 30% of their bill.

Help towards service charges from the DWP are complex depending what the service charges are for.

What Local Authority do you come under?
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

I thought they scrapped the unemployed getting full ctax paid? you might have to still make a small contribution but it won't be much I'd imagine considering you are on benefits and need to live on the Applicable Amount.
  • Havering. All I am worried about is that me esa has been stopped since 18th June ( only got the letter yesterday ) Just hoping I dont lose anything when I apply for jsa tomorrow as that money pays the ctax. Lucky enough I own the flat and would hate to sell it because I couldnt make the ctax payments. I will ask my mate to chip in more though as I have no choice. Really aprpeciate this advice.
    Thanks

If he can give you a extra fiver or tenner a week he would have £75/£70 a week to himself (£300/£280 a month). Considering all he has to buy from that is his food/clothes/entertainment he shouldn't mind much.
  • Didnt realise about ctax benefit changed. Have luckily enough worked for the last 7 years. Hopefully I can get back into a job soon. Just worried about the jsa enquiry tomorrow.
Will ask him tomorrow after I try and claim jsa.
    Thanks Roxy07

If you live in a property above Band D looks like they won't pay any Council Tax Support.

The non dependent deduction is increased from the standard £3.30 to £6.00.

Looks like you are lucky and live in a Local Authority that still gives 100% Local Council Tax Support for unemployed.

So this means you will have to pay £6 per week because of the deduction for a non dep in the household.

However if he was a tenant or border you would get 100% Council Tax Support but the DWP may make a deduction due to rental income.

  • HBO He was getting housing benefit when he was on jsa but that stopped after he told them he was working certain hours in the club and they said that someone informed him that he was doing extra work he had not told them so he said he just signed off and then a fortnight later he had a letter saying his housing benefit had stopped. So that means he broke the tenancy agreement he had.

Then he is your tenant and therefore you should get 100% Council Tax Support as no non dependent deductions apply for your tenants - if you get JSA I or ESA I then it will be the DWP that will take any rental income into account in calculating your entitlement and your Local Council will award you 100% help towards your Council Tax.

With an income of £120 and a rental liability of £40 your friend should still be bale to get about £12 per week help towards his rent.

At 61 years of age your friend may also want to check if he has reached the qualifying age for Pension Credit (or when he will do so) as he may qualify for this.
  • Thanks for that HBO. So are you allowed to tell me the first step to take. As I said earlier they wanted proof of his income, wage slips.
