Help! Laptop Going Bonkers!

Hi all,
Do forgive me if I a posting something that is already covered. I checked the malware/spyware section but each time I try to download one of the said programmes, it just does not seem to work.
The laptop was working fine last night. This morning I logged on, and went onto eBay. There were various bits which had been underlined when I was searching for things. So for example, it had weight loss , so if I hovered over it, it showed me some dodgy website. Since then, the laptop has started to go bonkers. I've tried listing a few items and the pages keep popping up from somewhere.
I've phoned a friend and he told me to download AVG and Microsoft something or the other but they keep asking me download programme after programme and it's supposedly doing every search under the sun but the problem is still there.
Please can someone tell me in basic terms what I should do? I cicked on the malware/spyware removal forum but it went straight over my head. The first programme it asked me to download won't load and I haven't got a clue what I am doing! Booohooo.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the massive rant.
PS. I do have Norton virus cleaner or whatever it is called on my laptop but obviously the monster seemed to have gone straight through it.

Looks like it's well and truly funked. I've tried doing the Malware thing and a Adwcleaner someone else mentioned. Both programs freeze at the very start.
Does anyone know which button it is to MANUFACTURERS SETTING a SONY VAIO?0 -
Hi,
have you tried a restore point yet?0 -
Don't panic. Just wait until waddler8 comes along. Doesn't sound like anything serious. I can't go through it with you at the moment, as I'm packing for my next destination.0

Thank you all for your speedy responses.
I tried downloading and running all the programs mentioned but none of them would start up. I think the monster on the computer stopped them from running.
I managed to F10 for a manufacturers setting restore. Thankfully I saved all my data and information last week, so it's all good.
Once again, thanks for all your help, and apologies for taking up your time today x x x0 -

Does your Vaio have an ASSIST button (at top of the keyboard)? Coloured purple, might help.
Otherwise, type 'recovery' in the search, and reinstall. A bit drastic, but if all else fails ............
Back everything up first though.
Good luck0 -

Many thanks for your time and response.
It's all good now. I had saved all the data last week, so I am happy.
I hope I never get one of those spyware malware things again. It was a text enhancer as I have googled it and that is exactly what it was doing.
Once again, thanks all for your help. Enjoy the rest of the weekend now.0 -
Glad your laptop's sorted mimi.
Good luck0
