I'd hazard a guess at an air rifle, maybe a local kid from his bedroom window.

Regarding the temperature causing problems, last year I saw a neighbours rear screen shatter for no reason whatsoever, their was a few neighbours about at the time, closest was about 6 foot away walking a dog when it happened.
As the OP said the chip itself was behind the wiper, so I'd doubt an air rifle pellet would have hit this. I'd still argue it's a straightforward stone chip, probably picked up during recent rain when the OP would have been using his wipers.

Hard to judge the scale of the pic. Is the smudge where the wiper has gone over the crack or could it be a footmark where someone has climbed over the car?

I think you're maybe jumping to conclusions too quickly about the neighbours with a grudge. Why would they go to the bother of chipping the windscreen under the wiper when they could just key the paintwork or similar?

I've made windscreen claims in the past with no effect on premiums.

I had a door mirror damaged once while parked away from home one night. Sad local people always take offence when a 'foreign' car parks up for the night even though it is a public road/parking spot.

Yeah, i've seen damaged wing mirrors on vehicles in this particular street, overnight and occasionally on the kerb side, so I always tuck mine in.

Many year ago, an ex lived with her sister in a terraced town house, her sister had a car which she was trying to sell and parked it one night in front of next door. First thing in the morning we woke to the sound of a car alarm, someone had smashed all the windows, broken the wing mirrors and slashed all the tyres. The neighbours were like "dunno what your talking about, shouldn't be parked there anyway".

Parking can be a really touchy subject with some people.....

Looks like perfectly normal stone chip to me. I think you're jumping to ridiculous conclusions with your neighbours.

When you've had your wing mirrors ripped/hanging off, aerials stolen/bent and tyres slashed, thats when you want to start getting paranoid (and yeah, I've had all those things)
  • Someone attempted to key it, failed (how hard can that be), lifted the wiper, struck the windscreen, put the wiper down again then made their escape.

    Sounds highly unlikely.

That aside, the wifes car needs a screen, it puts her insurance up £3. Yep, £3 for a £360 claim.

Don't you just hate when people start threads and don't update them?

I decided to go through insurance for the windscreen (£75), they used National windscreens and the guy was pretty reasonable, seems to have done a good job, used Pilkington glass.
So far, so good, no apparent leaks or anything.

Obviously it's slightly different to the original, but much better for my onboard camera, I can now mount it closer to the top of the screen and rear view mirror!! :D

Primary reason for going through insurance is that I slag them off so much on internet forums and wanted to test properly to see if windscreen claims do actually affect premiums....... I think it's called "taking one for the team" ;)

Should my premiums go up, I will be utterly ruthless!!! :rotfl:

You can find out what difference this claim makes to your premiums now by doing dummy quotes online with and without the claim in your history.

(Check that the claim doesn't impact this years ncd and alter this if necessary when doing the quotes)
