We bank on 25 mins. On a not terrible but not good day it's 40 mins, so thirty is a pretty damn good average in our experience.0 -

Lots of good suggestions. can I add (sorry if this is obvious!) having decided on a few places, don't just nip up at a weekend with viewings booked.
Ideally book a B&B (or try Travelodge / Premier Inn offers) and have a really good poke around. Walk past schools at drop-off / throw-out time. Do a pass by likely houses at 11pm (if feasible). If possible, do the train journey. Call in at the library & community centres and look at what groups are popular etc.
Then have a serious look at houses.0 -
Billericay is ok - but schools are Basildon-controlled
Billericay is lovely and 30mins into liverpool street.. but primary schools are hugely overcrowded - i've been forced to home educate my 5 year old as not 1 space available in any school within 7 miles for him. All schools within 4 miles have over the government limit in his year group and took over 12 months for my 7 year old to get a space in her year group locally.

I used to live in Worcester Park/New Malden area..zone 4. good train lines to Waterloo, then drain to Bank (one stop).
Very family oriented suburb. Kingston is nice spot, but might be zone 5.
Much overlooked suburb but plenty of good primary schools.0 -

And Kingston has grammer schools which may be important to the OP.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

Norbury, SW London. Excellent value for money. 20 mins to Victoria. Decent schools.0

St Albans is really lovely and 35 minutes to Kings Cross; up to 45 minutes for the tube right into Oxford St and 52 minutes direct to East Croydon. I get this train for meetings in London and always give myself an hour to either Oxford St or East Croydon (where both offices I visit are) and am always on time.0

North Finchley - N12 or N20. Leafy, fantastic schools, safe streets, easy commute down the Northern Line (and you get a seat in the morning), great parks and open spaces, loads of good places to eat out, good shops etc etc. We've lived here since our kids were little and now they're teenagers and we've never regretted it for an instant.0
