We have the Angelcare monitor (not the video) and I wouldn't be without it, it means you don't have to worry and it only clicks in if they make a noise. But I'd get a video one because as they get older its good to see what they are up to, if they are just crying for attention or if they need you.

I'm going to get hubby to put a camera in his room for when he gets bigger, we have CCTV so can just wire it into existing.

In short if I'd definitely have one

If you're concerned about SIDs / safety / etc, then NHS/WHO recommended until 6m+ baby should be sleeping in the same room as you, day and night - which is cheaper than a video monitor!
I think this is worth pointing out, and also that "sleeping in the same room" DOES NOT mean "sleeping in your bedroom but you are downstairs", it means baby should physically be in the same room as you are currently in, every time they are sleeping, for six months.

My LO is nearly 6m now, I must remember to set up our monitor so I can actually have some time in the evenings! We have the Angelcare one. He doesn't sleep until 8-9pm so for us personally I don't think it would be worth having the video as I won't be away from him for long before coming to bed myself. If he was asleep by 6pm every night it would be different!

I told my OH about this last night, I told him about the webcam option, his response was "but that will lead to someone hacking it and kidnapping the baby". I was gobsmacked and fairly speechless. How he thought they'd kidnap the baby if we were in the house at the time I have no idea.

In case anyone is like us and just wanting a temporary solution with this ridiculous weather we're having - I came across this the other day http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Visual-Baby-Monitor-with-Skype
and am currently using my geriatric netbook with a built-in webcam upstairs to just keep an eye on the eldest while this heatwave is on (she wakes up if we even contemplate opening the bedroom door to check on her and won't go back to sleep again lightly).

Not a solution I'd want to use long-term but for odd one-off nights it's a neat little workaround.

  • In my opinion no unless you can find good value on ebay or somewhere similar.
