Incase anyone is interested. The case fitted into the Ryanair crate easily, I packed it level with the top, and was careful to not let any of the front pockets bulge, it slid in and out very easily.

So relieved to hear this. I've just bought one, but it actually measures 56 cm in height and was the same height as the narrower cabin bag which according to the label is 56.5 cm. I am still a bit worried as the lady at CS said they had a few back that were refused by Ryan Air.

As long as you pack reasonably lightly level with the rim of the case, and don't put anything (other than paperwork) in the outside pockets it will definitley be ok.
I was a bit worried myself, but I wasn't even asked to put it in the crate or have it weighed, I just put it in myself when we got to the airport to be on the safe side.
The ones they have had back must of been packed full to not fit in the crate and you can't blame Matalan for that. (Either that or people have only needed them for 1 holiday and have used that as an excuse for a refund!)
