Help!
In 2010 I opened a pay monthly contract with Tesco and gave the mobile to my son. He now wants to take over that contract, but Tesco say that's not possible - he'll have to take out a new contract.
He's now opened a new contract with Tesco and I called them to move his number over however I want to keep the existing contract open and move my T-Mobile number over to it.
Tesco tell me that if they move the number from my existing Tesco contact to my sons new Tesco contract then my existing contract will have to be closed. Does this make sense?

The existing Tesco contract provides unlimited texts and data which is why I don't want to lose it.

Can anyone suggest how I can achieve what I want?
My son needs to keep his number and I want to keep the original contract, but with my T-Mobile number.

Thanks a lot - Octavian

Unfortunately they are correct, if you port out to your sons new line the old line is terminated.

If you port in from T-Mobile, the old number is no longer yours.

Unfortunately, if you want to keep your account, you can port your T-Mobile in, but you can't port the number away.

May be it's impossible at Tesco for some mysterious reason (like 'computer says NO'), but generally this is possible and major providers do this - provided that the new person passes the credit check.

My son has already passed the credit check and started a new contract as we were told. Only now are they telling up that the original contract will be terminated when his number is moved across.

It's so frustrating getting different answers from everyone at Tesco.

I can be missing something, but I don't see anything different.
You cannot transfer the number and keep the account.
Generally this is a norm only for inter-networks porting, but even in this case there were reports that networks were able to make exceptions and to make arrangements allowing to keep both the account and the number.

Not really exceptions, but to save a complaint they have managed to coordinate retrieving the number from the pool of dormant numbers and set up an account using the old tariff etc. This is not something that most staff will be able to do and would require experience and sufficient "rights" and a fair bit of luck as there is much that could prevent this. For example, it may be impossible to create an account on defunct or legacy tariffs.

One of you change your number?
Not that hard, plus gets rid of all those people who you don't want to have your number.

    Thanks for all your comments.

I've now transferred the number to my son and cancelled my Tesco contract. It was too much hassle to resolve. You would think they could be more flexible.

I'll probably take a new SIM only deal with Tesco and buy a Galaxy on S3 from Asda for £319 and get my PAC code from T-Moblie.

    Regards,

If you were happy with Tesco (network wise) you should consider GiffGaff that also runs on O2.

Unlimited texts, unlimited Internet and 250 minutes is £12 a month.
