Are estate agents scared to use email?

I only ask I as I work through the day and do not have easy access to a phone - yet have easy access to my emails. However it seems 90% of estate agents will only reply to Rightmove enquires via a phone call (even though I specify email is the best method to contact me).

Why do we even need Estate Agents? Travel Agents have almost become a thing of the past - people book holidays online, I cannot understand why EA's haven't gone the same way especially as people all go through Rightmove anyway.

Sorry..rant over :)

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Very good point.. I almost feel like ignoring EA's who ignore my plea to send me an email. Are there any honest EA's.... answers on a postcard (or an email lol)

Point 1 - the EA is a salesperson acting to maximise benefit for their client, the seller. Corresponding with you by e-mail allows you to ignore them, and that's not a desirable outcome from their point of view. They want to talk to you to hold you in conversation.

Couldn't agree more! I have asked for further details/viewings on probably fifty houses on Rightmove, and each time specified that they please contact me via email. I could count the number of email replies on one hand. I work 9-6.30, so no way I would ever be able to answer the phone during any EA's office hours. Email however, I'm on 24/7, and will nearly always reply within the hour. To me, they just seem to be shooting themselves in the foot.
    Mortgage received 21/12/2018
    Mortgage at start - £261,980
    Current mortgage - £260,276
Saving towards a loft conversion first, then to smash the mortgage down!

That was my conclusion. If I ever asked any questions via email the reply would never be via email. The response would be a phone call if they had my number or if not, no response at all.

Exactly the same situation as me - I'm glad it isn't just me I thought I was going crazy! I had one estate agent once tell me.. that they didn't have an email address?!? I was like... hmm.. weird considering you got my details via an email from Rightmove!

RM is financed by the EAs who advertise their properties there. If all the EAs disappeared, RM would Soon follow.

There's area of the country where hardly any property is on RM, especially in Scotland.

Which bit of what you've said here implies dishonesty on EA's part.... Preferring to use e-mail?
  • Unless of course RM started letting people market their properties themselves in which case the above still applies (i.e. EAs out of the market).

Then it would be more like AutoTrader is for cars - i.e. half private sellers, half business sellers and many in-between.
The smaller the monkey the more it looks like it would kill you at the first given opportunity.
