The National Debt has very rarely been lower than it is today.
Add a few more years budgets, and factor in flat GDP..... 100% predicted soon.
Not to mention the off balance sheet debt, future welfare obligations, contingent liabilities and the fact we no longer have a Commonwealth/Empire to benefit from to the same extent.

our current debt is really quite high by 'peace'time standards but does pale into insignificance compared to the sort of sums you rack up getting into wars against one of the world powers [occasionally carpet bombing the odd second world country into oblivion is only very moderately expensive, particularly if they have oil]

The national debt has only been lower than it is today for 30-40 years out of the last 350 or so.

To me, that is an indication of the irrelevance of the national debt to our general economic well-being.
It is no different from all the other theoretically calculated numbers with which economic science tries to claim some kind of respectability.
