Completing 4/7/13, tenancy ending 24/7/13, need advice!

Hi guys,

We're FTBs, and are completing on our house on the 4th of July. However officially our tenancy on our current rented flat ends on 24th July after we gave the correct notice.

So that's a 20 day overlap, which seems like a lot, but we wanted to leave plenty of time to move stuff and sort things out.

Thing is, I'm now confused about changing things like utilities and council tax.

Obviously when contacting these companies we'll need to give a date as to when we "move" - but what date should that be given such a range?

And if we, for example, change the electricity supply over to the new house on July 12th, what happens in our old flat for the period 13th - 24th? Obviously not much electricity would be used if we're not there, but how would it work?

I know we're obviously liable for supplies to both properties between the 4th and 24th but just confused as to how we manage this.

    The contracts at each property are seperate.

    You are responsiblefor the utilities, council tax etc at your tenancy property until 24/7. On that day, goback, read the meters, contact the utilities with the readings and ask for a final bill tobe sent to your new addres.

    On 4/7 when you take ownership of your new property, you become responsible. Read the meters on 4/7 and call the old owner's suppliers (& council) give them the readings and ask for a new account.

    Ifyou later want to 'shop around' for cheaper suppliers to switch to, you can.

    We were in pretty much the same position as we sold up, rented in between and then bought again, with a 3 week overlap. What happened was that we rang the utilities up and told them we were moving to a new house but we'd still be responsible for the old one until further notice. They set up new accounts for the new property and told us to ring them back on the day we had finished with the old property. In the mean time I could see both accounts, e.g. on the EDF website. When the time came, we just cancelled the old accounts with final readings taken from the checkout.

    It was similar for council tax, although they used the overlap period as a credit against our new property since it was unoccupied for those 3 weeks. I don't know if all councils do that or if we were just lucky.

    I did the same although it was a slightly shorter period. Deal with each property separately.
