If it was my property, then friend or no friend, there is no way I would offer keys or the option to move anything in prior to completion of the sale. The potential pitfalls if things go wrong are too great.

I went through my solicitor when I moved and got access to the garage 2 days prior to moving, which helped me greatly when it came to the completion date as I had already moved alot of boxes. Without the key I would have had to got a removal company involved, so saved £600-700.

If you know the vendor just ask them directly..

Personally, I dont see anything wrong with moving a few boxes into the house prior to exchange if it is empty.
If I were the vendor I would allow it and insist it is at your own risk should everything get nicked.

Yes, but not if the OP hasnt even exchanged.. Anything could happen.. Once they have completed and have a completion date, then yes, I would try to get the keys to start moving boxes.

I don't think a solicitor would agree with you. When we sold our house a few weeks ago our solicitor even advised us against handing over the keys on the morning of completion (we'd exchanged 4 weeks earlier) before she could tell us all monies had changed hands etc. (eventually happened at 2pm). Made it a right pain for us and our buyers but I wasn't prepared to risk it against legal advice!

No harm in asking I suppose. I had keys three days early for the house I'm in now. I didn't ask for them, the seller offered. It was great being moved in before we picked up the official keys.
