CB is I think OK. Even Samantha Cameron is entitled to it.

I bet she isn't - you don't get any child benefit if there is a high-earning person in the household - and I bet David Cameron's earnings are higher than the £60k or whatever it is! I hope they are, anyway, as PM.

hi i'm now confused my qestion is very simple will my presence ( claiming JSA ONLY)affect whatever benefits they may get yes or no??

i am not claiming any other benefits other than JSA, they work full time i'm not even paying them rent.

please also note that they PRIVATELY RENT the house!

I'm sorry that you appear to be getting rather frustrated but people (at least me :)) were working under the assumption that you were a lodger (as per your title)

Now you have given us new information it appears that you are not a lodger because you are not paying any rent.

So, now you appear to be a non dependent.

This means that if the family you are living with is receiving any Housing Benefit or Council Tax benefit then they might get what is called a non dependent's deduction from both their HB and CT reduction.

This will depend on your age (you haven't told us) and, in part, your local council.

You need to look up HB/CT reduction and your local council's name and there should be a 'table' to show you what they might have to pay extra. Of course any extra money would have to, in theory, be paid by you since your presence would be causing this reduction.

Here is a link for one council to show you what I mean:

No other benefits are affected by your presence.

hi i'm in my mid 30's i still dont understand why there benefits, IF ANY, should be affected because they are not getting any money from me as i'm claiming jsa only.

Other people say NO nothing of theirs are effected as i'm classed as a separate entitiy. So today's round of replies are still confusing me.

As i said they both work full time and have a 3 year old and rent privately.

To be honest there are confusing replies because you did not give us the full information when you first posted.

Whether you do not agree with the 'rules' is neither here nor there :)

Perhaps if you told us what benefits the family are claiming then we could be more precise.

The alternative is for the family to visit CAB or ring the relevant department and ask them.

I haven't asked them what benefits they are getting as i saw it as a bit personal it was just a thought in case there maybe an issue.

I don't know how benefits work for families only for single people like me. with them both earning 40 hours each i wouldn't have thought they would be getting any housing benefit just whaterver child related and working tax credit.

Since you are not paying any rent then any child related benefits will not be affected.

Since you don't know what benefits they are getting (if any) it is impossible for anyone on here to give you a definitive answer to your question.

What we can say is that, because you do not pay rent, you would probably be classed as a non-dependent (rather than a lodger). For some benefits - most notably housing benefit (known as Local Housing Allowance for private rentals) this would result in a deduction would be made from their benefits for a non-dependent. The situation would be exactly the same if you were a related person - even one of their children - over 18 and not a student, living in the house, even if that person is not making any financial contribution.

In a way, though, it is not your problem, it is theirs. If they are concerned about the situation they should make the appropriate enquiries. At least then they would be able to provide the relevant information about their benefits to enable accurate advice to be given. If they are not concerned, it may very well be because they do not receive any benefits that might be affected by your presence in the household.

If you ask if they're getting housing benefit you will receive your answer, if it's no there will be no change whether you work or not.

At present it seems you are staying with family/friends who have kindly gave you a roof over your head to help you out.

As said the only change in these circumstances depend on them receiving housing benefit which i guess not as they both work.
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.

It is impossible to say without knowing what benefits they are receiving/what you will be earning/whether you pay any rent.

It is not as simple as you seem to think so would respectfully suggest that you post again when you find a job (and good luck on that front :))

We all will be very pleased to help you when you are in a position to give us specific information.
