Lodging - Benefits - Private let

I am currently lodging in a private let, its a family who i live with its only their names upon the tennacy etc.

I am claiming JSA only, they work full time, would me being there effect whatever benefit they do get in regards to the child?

Thanks

  • No it would not. You are classed as separate households. You may also be entitled to the shared room rate for your LHA if you are under 35 as well so may be worth asking about that too.

Depends what benefits they are claiming:

If the rent from the room is less than £4250 they don't need to declare it to HMRC: bit I think they will need to declare it for some benefits.. (it is income in real £££s after all).

CB is I think OK. Even Samantha Cameron is entitled to it.

    CTC/WTC may well be affected.

HB/LHA & the new "Council Tax Reduction" would also vary I think depending in the total income.

If someone can however find a HMRC or gov.uk link stating rent-a-room income below £4250 is not counted as regards these benefits I'd be very interested...

    Cheers!

From the original post i get the feeling he is staying with family/friends and is concerned it may affect their benefits, he is on JSA and probably wouldn't be able to afford a proper rent without support of HB/LHA, therefore my conclusion is he is paying keep as an ND.

Therefore if the tenants are claiming any Housing Benefit they would have to declare you, if not it doesn't matter.

No slender it won't affect any relevant benefits, if they are getting a small amount of Housing Benefit which i doubt it may affect that if you are over 25.
