The 1.3ghz Celeron-M is basically a Pentium-M (with half the cache) and though it may be little slower it's fairly marginal. If you multiply the speed by 1.5 you get somewhere near the Pentium equivalent - this was for the older Pentium-M/Celeron-M line but I think this is the lastest version with 1mb/2mb cache although I expect the same thing applies. Personally I wouldn't go below a 1.5ghz Celeron-M when you can often get these at a similar price.

Would it be worth upgrading to the Pentium 715a processor(1.5GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 400MHz FSB)? I've got a price of £585 for that processor, the 8 x DVD+/-Rw drive, the 922 all in one printer and the Intel® ProWireless 2100 802.11b Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card. How does that sound for a deal?

Sounds like a good deal to me. Pentium-M laptops below £600 haven't been too common though I guess they are more likely as time passes. Hope the printer is free though. And if it has 256mb of RAM always buget to upgrade to 512mb.

cheers for that, it has 512mb of RAM and the printer is free, reckon I'll go for that one then.

Prompted by this site I was looking for a laptop for around £500.

Unfortunately, I have this 'thing' about getting the best value for my dosh and cheapest is not always best.

With the help of forum messages and members (in particular Edinburghlass who spent ages going through the Dell spec with me) I actually made a purchase after 'immin' and 'ammin' for almost a year.

I started with a Dell Inspiron 6000 but with the Pentium M, with free double memory (512MB RAM), 40GB hard drive, at £671 (changing to 1 year collect & return, with £108 off normal price) then started changing the spec to suit my basic needs!

I changed the processor to a M, 740 1.73GHz Mobility Radeon X300, which meant I had to change the video card to match (64mb Radeon) adding £79.90, changed the optical device8xDVD+/-RW drive (£58.75) then changed the wireless networking to a 2200 802 b/g (£5.88) but when it came to the Base Router I got stuck so phoned Dell. The woman was clearly foreign but very helpful though at first I didn't trust her when she said 'of course' to my question about accessing Broadband through cable with Blueyonder. This is where she advised that I needed a special Router which is not listed on their website as it is not their make! She advised she would add it 'her end' at £78 including VAT.

She talked me into upgrading the free printer to the all in one and then asked me if I wanted a case. I said, "only if its free love" so she added in a Large Deluxe Nylon carrycase" (probably comes free anyway).

All in all I ended up with a total price of £929! I asked about the buy now pay later but was told there was a £49 admin charge so told her to forget it. She also advised delivery would be a maximum of 7 days.

However, I have not yet received my confirmation of order so cannot track this although she did ring back with my order number.

Thanks to everyone for costing me nearly double what I intended to spend but hopefully, will be exactly what I wanted.

    Happy bargain hunting.

PS it is interesting to note that you cannot find the Inspiron 6000 with the Pentium M unless you wait for the banner to change to the laptop offer and click on 'more details' it then shows you two choices, the 6000 NO4605 and the 4606 to the right. When opening two browsers and changing the spec on both to identical (leaving off router), the 4605 comes out at £959.09 and the 4606 at £833.59! Comments anyone?

Predefined configurations are always cheaper, than the customized ones. It is been the case with Dell always. Don't know why?.

Could I suggest you to look at the Eval Code 305-N04603 (£774), which could work cheaper and it also comes with 1 GB RAM.

How do I find that code - put in the E-val code and it is not identified (tried with and without the NO
