They have been harrassing me for 9 months, asking for someone who has never had this number. I keep asking politely for them to stop calling. They keep calling. Time for some fun.

It's horrible being called alot I agree, but its HORRENDOUS having to do a job like this when it's the only option to get the bills paid. And poorly paid at that.

Anyone who thinks it's ok to be abusive on the phone to another person only doing what they are being told to do by management should be a shamed, and I hope that you never have to experience the soul destroying job that is working in a cold calling job.

If I go in to a shop it is my choice and I expect staff to try and sell me things. I don't expect to be called every 2 weeks for 9 months by people who don't undertand that someone doesn't live here, and never has lived here.

I've done call centre work. I know what it's like. I also know that the 'odd' calls can be a bit of light relief and a talking point down the pub afterwards.

Not particularly MSE, but get a TrueCall unit, they are brilliant! I work from home and used to be plagued by them, especially the ones from 'Microsoft Support', who can't tell me which of the PCs I have at home has the problem they claim to have detected (I work in IT Support, so it's always highly amusing when they ring).

In fact, I'm almost missing them ... :p

My mother used to like these phone calls, she'd tell them about her day. They usually hung up before she did.

I just say no thanks and put the phone down. It's not worth getting angry about. If I don't want to answer the phone because I'm busy I let it go to the answerphone.

I appreciate these people are just doing their job but their job involves annoying me. Also, quite often, their job involves operating outside the law or in legal grey areas and ignoring responsibilities in regard to Ofcom, the TPS and the Communications Act.

As a result, while I am not abusive to them on the phone (this in itself would be illegal) nor would I consider it acceptable to blow whistles down the phone to them, I have no sympathy for them. I do not believe that a worker is absolved of the responsibilities to behave ethically and legally because they are a wage slave to an employer who chooses not to do so. Therefore, for the particularly irksome ones, such as Consumer Lifestyles, if I have time I'll waste their time in one of various ways that I find amusing.

The most that I would hope for them is that they realise that they can do much better and strive to improve themselves to acquire a much better job in the future.

You quoted my post, then declared that people should be ashamed. I think it was only fair to assume that it was aimed at me. Apologies if that was not the case.

I'm after a bit of fun with the annoying people, not to abuse telephonists doing their job. Although some of the abusive calls were the funniest to be honest.

'What do you mean you can't do that for me? We're about to go to war with Iraq'
'F ing this F ing that etc etc. *pause* Do you want an affair? I'm a long-distance lorry driver so my wife would never know'

I'm bowing out of this thread, I have been a cold caller and I hated every second of it and I wouldn't wish the job on anyone, hence the passion in my reply. Call center work isn't the same (done that too) but remember cold calling is just another way of selling something- like advertising on tv/radio/newspapers etc and it works, otherwise they wouldn't exist. Having to take cold calls is a first world problem imo, and when I get cold callers now, I remember it cost nothing to be kind and decline.
